Youngstown, Ohio – The Duquesne University men's tennis team opened up its fall campaign this weekend at the Youngstown State Invitational at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Dukes were highlighted by the doubles team of freshmen
Uvan Patel and
Arnau Anton Garcia, who took second in the 16 team single elimination bracket. The eight-seeded duo opened the invite with an 8-7 (2) victory over the ninth-seed, Rohan Bhat and Rowan Matorin of Case Western Reserve before upsetting the No. 1 seed Onder Balci and Viktor Van Craenenbroeck of YSU, 8-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. Patel and Anton would secure an 8-7 (4) win over Ansh Shah and Anmay Devaraj of CWRU to earn a spot in the finals. The two freshmen would drop an 8-7 (0) decision to the 11-seed Casey Hishinuma and Ajay Mahenthiran.
In "B" Draw, eighth-seeded Anton Garcia captured a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over ninth-seeded Xavier Branagan of Le Moyne before taking down top-seeded Viktor Van Craenenbroeck of YSU, 6-4, 6-4. The freshman would fall in the quarterfinals 6-3, 2-6, 6-10 to the fourth-seed George Kosseifi of Case Western Reserve. Freshman
Tancredi Alfano was defeated by the 12
th seed Lorenzo Bortolaso of Le Moyne 6-1, 7-5.
In the "A" draw, Junior
Alfrendo Vogelaar fell to 12
th seed Bernardo Teixeira of Le Moyne 6-7 (4), 7-5, 7-10 as classmate
Keita Duclos dropped a 6-7 (3), 6-7 (4) decision to 10-seeded Casey Hishinuma of CWRU. Freshman
Aril Kayra Tuna lost a 6-2, 2-6, 6-10 match to eighth-seeded Ansh Shah of Case Western.
After a bye in the first round, junior Pierce Mannin fell to the 2
nd seed Rohan Bhat of Case Western Reserve 6-1, 6-0 in "C" Draw. 11
th seeded
Teo Papadopoulos fell to the sixth-seed Jacob Maravillas of Le Moyne 7-6 (5), 6-2.
In the consolation matches, Kayra Tuna and Alfano defeated William Rassat and Alex Woiten (YSU) 8-7(5) as Vogelaar downed Peter Hatton (LM) 6-4 3-6 10-2. Duclos bounded back with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alex Woiten (YSU).
