Tennis Ready for A-10 Championships in Florida

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University men's and women's tennis teams are set to compete at the Atlantic 10 Championships this week at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The men's tournament will run from Thursday, April 25 through Sunday, April 28 while the women's is from Wednesday, April 24 through Saturday, April 27.

The Dukes enter as the No. 8 seed in the 10-team, single elimination tournament and will battle the No. 9 seed Fordham in the opening round on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. The winner will advance to Friday's quarterfinals at 9:00 a.m. against top-seeded VCU. The Semifinals follow on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with the A-10 Championship set for 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Duquesne ended the regular season with a 7-11 overall mark and a 1-5 record in conference action. In February, the Dukes swept the Rams 7-0 in the league opener but have lost its last three conference matches entering Thursday.
Senior Kaipo Marshall has been stout for the Dukes this spring, recording a team-leading 11-2 singles record, all at the No. 1 spot. Marshall has won five of his last seven matches, including two of the last three against conference foes. Graduate student Jin Dassanayake sits second on the team with a 9-3 singles record, mostly coming from the fifth spot. Dassanayake is 8-1 overall at fifth singles and is currently 5-3 over his last eight matches.

In doubles competition, the team of Keita Duclos and Alfrendo Vogelaar pace the way for Duquesne, mounting an impressive 15-3 overall record and a perfect 5-0 in conference action. Over the last 10 matches at the No. 2 and 3 spot, the tandem has produced a 9-1 stint, including five straight victories. Marshal and Dassanayake sit second at the one or two spot for the Dukes, holding a 5-3 mark, including a 2-1 record at the top spot.

Duquesne snapped a two-match skid in its final regular season contest, downing St. Bonaventure 4-0, to finish the regular season 7-12 overall and 1-4 in league action. The Dukes received the No. 10 seed in the 13-team, single-elimination field and will battle the No. 7 seed Dayton on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Duquesne will look to get revenge on the Flyers as they dropped a 5-2 decision just two weeks ago in Ohio. The winner advances to the quarterfinals on Thursday, where it will battle the No. 2 seed Saint Louis at 7:00 p.m. The semifinals are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Friday, with the championships set for 5:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Graduate student Daniela Latoni has played in the top spot all season long for the Dukes and is currently 7-3 over her last 10 matches, including a 9-10 overall mark. She has posted a 4-1 mark over the last five contests, including a pair of victories over conference opponents. Freshman Mila Badics has seen action at the No. 2, 3, and 4 spots while posting a 6-5 record at the second position. She currently holds a 2-0 mark at third singles while tallying a 3-1 mark in league action.

In doubles competition, Badics and sophomore Jasa Roka pace the Dukes with an overall mark of 11-5 this season while mainly playing at the second slot. The duo has mounted an 11-3 record at the two spot while being victorious in six straight matches. Latoni and junior Kaya Rand sit at the No. 1 doubles for Duquesne, posting an 8-5 mark while securing consecutive victories to end the regular season. The Dukes have used six difference combinations in the final doubles slot.
