Lai Leads Dukes at YSU Invitational

Youngstown, Ohio - The Duquesne University men's tennis team continued its fall season over the weekend the at the Youngstown State Invitational, with the Dukes competing across the A and B singles and doubles draws against players from Youngstown State, Case Western Reserve, Marquette, Mercyhurst and IU Indy.

The highlight of the weekend for Duquesne came from senior Austin Lai, who advanced to the championship match of the B Singles Draw.

Lai opened tournament play with a dramatic quarterfinal victory over Brandon Pham, battling through a deciding-set tiebreaker. He then outlasted Case Western Reserve's Konrad Kwiatkowski in the semifinals, 7-6, 1-6, 12-10, to earn a spot in the final.

In the championship match, Lai faced Youngstown State's Phopthem Sriwong. After dropping the opening set, Lai responded to force a third-set tiebreaker before ultimately falling 3-6, 6-3, 13-11 in a tightly contested final.

Junior Arnau Anton Garcia competed in the A Draw, reaching the Round of 16 before seeing his tournament come to an end against Youngstown State's Rowan Matorin. Garcia's appearance came just one week after he led Duquesne with two singles victories at the Brad Hanes Invitational.

Sophomore Zidaan Hassan also represented the Dukes in the A Draw. Hassan's opening-round match ended via retirement, giving him a chance to compete in the tournament before his singles run came to an early close.
