Tennis Competes at Viking Invite & ITA Masters

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University men's and women's tennis teams were in action this weekend as the men's team competed at the Viking Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State and at the ITA Masters at Davidson University. The women's squad also traveled to Davidson, NC. to battle at the ITA Masters.

Women's ITA
On Friday during doubles competition, the team of senior Kaya Rand and sophomore Alexandra O'Brien earned themselves a spot in the semifinals. They began the day with a bye in the round of 32 before defeating Ella Faessler and Amelia Tye of Massachusetts, 8-7 (7-2) to reach the semifinals. Rand and O'Brien would fall to eventual champs Nevena Kolarevic and Julianne Nguyen of Fordham.

In singles play, sophomore Mila Badics faced Fiorella Duran of Saint Louis, dropping a 6-2, 6-4 decision while Junior Jasa Roka would battle Daniela Porges of Davidson falling 6-4, 2-6, 6-7 (7-9).

Men's ITA
During Friday's doubles competition, junior Keita Duclos and freshman Uvan Patel earned a bye in the round of 32 before dropping an 8-0 decision to Brady Hussey and Kyle McNally of Dayton. Duclos and Patel would face Justus Agbo and Santiago Valle-Saenz of Saint Joseph's in the consolation bracket, falling 8-7 (7-5).

During singles competition, junior Alfrendo Vogelaar earned a bye in the first round before falling 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) to Andres Castellanos of Saint Louis. Duclos also competed in singles play, defeating Davis Phillips of Dayton, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 before his next match was recorded as retired due to injury.

Men's Cleveland State Invite
At the Viking Invitational, the men's team competed in both doubles and singles competition. In doubles play on Friday, freshmen Aril Kayra Tuna and Teo Papadopoulos dropped a 6-3 decision to Jon Totorica and Leon Chen of Case Western. Junior Pierce Manning and freshman Tancredi Alfano fell by a count of 6-4 to Matthew Plunkett and Ajay Mahenthiran of Case.

In singles play, Tuna won a pair of matches for the Dukes. He began the invite by capturing a 5-7, 7-6 (3), 10-6 come from behind victory over Polis Koursaros of Holly Cross before defeating Louie Fletcher of Butler, 6-1, 6-3. Tune would unfortunately fall to Aidan William of Holy Cross, 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16. Manning also competed in singles competition, dropping a 6-1, 7-5 decision to Pumiphat Sukkho of IUPUI as Papadopoulos fell by a count of 6-1, 6-1 to Noah Viste of IUPUI. Tancredi would be defeated by Brent Reynolds, 6-1, 6-2

UP NEXT
The Dukes completed its fall portion of its schedule and will now prepare for the spring. The men's team will battle Radford on Saturday, January 25 and the women will travel to West Virginia on the same date.
