PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne men's tennis team made the short trip over to the Carnegie Mellon Invitational this past weekend.

The Dukes competed in matches against Saint Francis U and the host-Tartans. DU went 9-5 in singles play and posted a 5-4 mark in doubles competition at the two-day event. There was not a format for the event, as each team played standalone matches against each other.

Tamirlan Teberikov and
Joey Matthews each went 2-0 in singles competition to lead the Dukes. Teberikov defeated Saint Francis' Christian Banti (6-4, 6-3) and dispatched Jonathan Nottingham of Carnegie Mellon (6-1, 6-0). Matthews was rallied for a win over SFU's, Matt Kozar, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) and also defeated Matt Blose of SFU 6-2, 6-1.

Kaipo Marshall went 2-1 in singles play. He knocked off William Wang (CMU) and Christian Banti (SFU) is straight sets, before dropping a hard-fought battle with Andrew Teixiera of Saint Francis, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8).

In doubles play, the team of Teberikov and
Alejandro Rodriguez-Vidal paced the Dukes with a 2-1 mark. The tandem earned identical 6-3 wins over the teams of Fabio Varella and Marc Fuste of Saint Francis and Jaden D'Abreo and Derek Wong of Carnegie Mellon.

Duquesne will have the week off, before traveling to the Youngstown State Invitational on Friday, Oct. 8. It will be the squad's final tune-up before the ITA Regionals the following weekend.
