EMMITSBURG, Md. – The tandem of
Alejandro Rodriguez-Vidal and
Tamirlan Teberikov claimed the championship at the Mountaineer Invitational hosted by Mount St. Mary's this past weekend.
Â
In addition, the duo of
Jin Dassanayake and
Bode Vance collected the "consolation" bracket championship after dropping their first matchup of the event.
Â
Each school entered doubles pairs into the tournament.  Those pairs played a doubles match, and the individuals then faced each other to make a best-of-three format.
Â
Rodriguez-Vidal and Teberikov defeated the team of Justin Cadeau and Daniel Dunac from Howard University 2-1 to collect the individual titles. Rodriguez-Vidal and Teberikov won the doubles matchup 6-3 to take the lead. After Cadeau defeated Rodriguez-Vidal (6-3, 6-1), Teberikov clinched the title with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Dunac.
Â
"The men competed well in both doubles and singles throughout the hot three days," said Duquesne Director of Tennis
Vanessa Steiner. "Alejandro and Tam battled against four solid teams to win the invite. They improved their play each round and Tam clinched it for them in the finals. Jin and Bode also had a strong showing. They fell to a tough team first round but then won the backdraw - coming together as a new doubles team and not dropping a doubles match."
Â
Rodriguez-Vidal and Teberikov nearly didn't make the championship round. The duo lost their doubles match to a team from George Mason in the semifinal round and needed to win in tie breakers in each of the singles matches to advance. Rodriguez-Vidal earned a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) win over Rishab Sardana, while Teberikov picked up a 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 victory over Ryan Charles in his singles match.
Â
The Dukes men's tennis team returns to the court when they travel to nearby Carnegie Mellon for the three-day Tartan Invitational on Friday, Sept. 24.
