Eight Dukes Compete at ITA Atlantic Regionals

EVENT: ITA Atlantic Regionals, Blacksburg, Va.

FORMAT: Single elimination

QUICK RECAP: In singles, three Dukes advanced to the Round of 64 - Harry Walshe, Corey Robinson and Adam Blasinsky. Rich Robbie and Alex Aleman were eliminated in the Round of 128, but secured victories in the consolation draw. Andrew Ong and Mehdi Mekaoui also played in the Round of 128.

Walshe opened up with a 3-set win over Georgetown's Jack Murphy - 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. He fell to Liberty's Egon Samaii 6-0, 6-1. Robinson also had a 3-set win in his first match - 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 over Radford's Micheil Meekers. He fell to Matt Barry of Penn State 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 64. Blasinsky took out William and Mary's Alec Miller in three sets 2-6, 7-6, 6-3. He advanced to play Virginia's Ryan Shane, who was the #2 seed and received a bye into the Round of 64. Shane was a 6-1, 6-3 winner.

After falling to Alexandre Drean of UMBC, 6-1, 6-1, Robbie was a 6-2, 7-5 winner over A-10 rival Daniel Gutierrez from George Mason in the consolation draw. Alexman had a tough 7-6, 7-6 loss to Chris Seitz of Villanova before defeating Joseph Cohen of A-10 school VCU 3-6, 4-1. Cohen retired in the 2nd set.

Ong fell to Calvin Mark of Navy 6-1, 6-2 in the Round of 128 and lost to Shane Korber of Georgetown in the consolation draw 6-4, 6-3. Mekaoui dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Brett Moorhead of James Madison.

The doubles team of Robbie and Robinson advanced to the Quarterfinals of doubles main draw. In the Round of 64, they were 8-2 winners over Nick Bybel and Maxwell Kane of Bucknell. In the Round of 32, the Dukes were 8-3 winners over Hernan Vasconez and Vineet Naran of Temple. Up next was the #3 seed Mac Styslinger and Henrik Wiersholm from Virginia. A heavy underdog, Robbie and Robinson pulled out one the biggest upsets of the tournament after defeating the UVA team 8-1. They advanced to the Quarterfinals, but fell to the #8 seed Jai Corbett and Joao Monteiro 8-4.

Mekaoui and Ong faced off against Villanova's Chris Seitz and Bradley Noyes for the right to face the #1 overall seed in the Round of 32. Mekaoui and Ong battled hard, but could not get past the Wildcats team, 8-6.

Aleman and Blasinsky advanced to the Round of 32 after an 8-4 win over Georgetown's Jordan Portner and Alex Tropiano. The Dukes were paired up against the #5 seed Ryan Shane and Luca Corinteli from Virginia. The UVA squad was too much as the Dukes fell 8-2.

The team of Walshe and Tim Kane also advanced to the Round of 32 after defeating Aries Wong and Calvin Mark of Navy 8-4. The Dukes went on to face the #4 seed team Michael Reilly and Leonard Stakhovsky of Penn State. PSU came away with an 8-6 win.

UP NEXT: The Dukes will participate Youngstown State Invitational beginning Oct. 24th.
