James Madison / Toledo
Duquesne's men's tennis team split a pair of weekend matches, topping James Madison, 4-3 on Friday in the Dukes' spring home opener, then traveling to Toledo on Saturday and suffering a 5-2 loss.
Freshman Rich Robbie won both of his matches at third singles, topping his JMU opponent, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and his Toledo foe, 7-5, 6-4. Also winning versus the JMU Dukes were senior Aram Abgaryan and freshmen Alex Aleman and Mehdi Mekaoui. The other DU winner versus Toledo was sophomore Pete Carpenter.
"We played two very good teams this weekend and are pleased to come away with a victory against James Madison," said head coach Rob Castille. "The guys competed really well in both matches, especially against JMU. We are a little banged up right now so we're hoping to get healthy and get some guys that are missing back in the lineup as soon as possible."
The Dukes, who were playing short-handed due to injuries, were forced to take forfeits at number six singles and at number three doubles both days.
The Red and Blue return to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 as they host Colgate at 5:00 pm at The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville, Pa.
