Monroeville, Pa. - Four singles wins enabled number five seed Duquesne to edge #8 Saint Joseph's, 4-3, Friday morning in a consolation round match at the Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championship Tournament at Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa.
The Hawks, after taking the doubles point, needed three wins in the head-to-head mathes to move on in the league tournament. That wasn't part of the Dukes' plans as freshmen Jeremy McClelland, Mark Maciuch and Gustavo Villares won in straight sets at number four, five and six singles, respectively.
The decider would be the number two match between junior Michael Ortega and the Hawks' Phil Bayliss. Down a set, Bayliss tied the match with a 7-6 win in the second frame. Ortega won the tiebreaker to keep the Red and Blue alive in the double-elimination tourney.
The Dukes will face #6 Dayton for fifth place in the tournament on Saturday, April 7, 2007, at 8:00 a.m. at Club 4 Life. The Flyers topped #7 Saint Louis, 4-2, Friday, to gain the other spot in Saturday's contest.
Number 4 St. Bonaventure, which beat the Dukes Thursday evening, faces #1 Charlotte, and #2 Xavier and #3 George Washington meet in the tournament semifinals Friday afternoon.
