Dukes Drop Niagara, 4-3 in Spring Opener

Duquesne's men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule with an exciting, 4-3 win over visiting Niagara Sunday afternoon at Club 4 Life in Monroeville. The Dukes captured the doubles point by winning at number and two and three then split the six singles matches.

Freshmen Jeremy McClelland and Mark Maciuch combined to win 9-8 (5) at number two doubles and juniors Michael Ortega and Ryan Weisband teamed up to win 8-5 at third singles.

In singles action, Ortega led things off by defeating his opponent in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4 at number two singles. The Dukes then suffered a loss at first singles before freshman Gustavo Villares won 6-4, 6-1 at number six.

The Purple Eagles captured wins at numbers three and five to tie the score at 3-3 before McLelland came through with the decisive 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-0 triumph at number four to seal the victory.

The Red and Blue return to action on Friday, Feb. 2 as they host Bucknell at 1:00 pm at Club 4 Life.
