Opening Tip

- The Duquesne University men's basketball team closes out the month of January by opening a two-game homestand Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. tip against St. Bonaventure at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.

- The Dukes, looking for their first Atlantic 10 win of the year at home, are coming off a 71-59 victory at Loyola Chicago (Jan. 24). The triumph marked the first time in program history Duquesne has won each of its first three conference games of a season on the road as the Dukes improved to 3-4 (.429) in A-10 action.

- In the win over the Ramblers, senior guard Tarence Guinyard scored 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half while also adding four rebounds, four assists and a steal. He shot 6-for-10 from beyond the arc in the victory and enters Wednesday's game tied for ninth in the Atlantic 10 in three-point field goals made per game (2.30) and 14th in three-point field goal percentage (.404).

- Guinyard is also the only players in the Atlantic 10 to rank in the top five in scoring (16.4 ppg), assists (5.25 per game) and assist-to-turnover (2.28), sitting fourth, second and fifth, respectively, in the categories.

- Junior guard Jimmie Williams registered his first career double-double in the win at Loyola Chicago, scoring 11 of his 16 points in the first half while also posting a career-high 10 rebounds.

- The 2025-26 season marks the 110th year of Duquesne basketball. The Dukes started play in 1913-14 (DU did not field a team in 1944-45-46 due to World War II). Thanks to an 83-63 victory over Niagara (Nov. 3) in its 2025-26 season opener, Duquesne earned program victory No. 1,500.

- In today's day and age of college basketball with the NCAA Transfer Portal, Duquesne offers senior forward David Dixon, who will play his final season with the Dukes in 2025-26 and has spent his entire career on the Bluff. Dixon, 6'9" and 230 pounds, owns career totals of 705 points and 524 rebounds and is just the second player in program history to eclipse career totals of both 100 blocks and 100 dunks.

- Dixon is one of just four players in the Atlantic 10 this season that have spent their entire career with one program, joining 6'10" forward Sean Logan of Davidson, 6'10" forward Christian Fermin of VCU and 6'11" center Mike Walz of Richmond. Ironically, each of the four student-athletes to have played their entire career at one institution are post players.

- Redshirt senior guard Maximus Edwards scored 10 points in a 92-80 win over Sacred Heart (Nov. 7) to reach exactly 1,000 points for his career. Named the 2023 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, Edwards scored 722 in two seasons at George Washington before transferring to the Bluff and has scored 399 points in his time at Duquesne. He owns a career scoring average of 9.8 points in 114 games at the NCAA Division I level thanks to 1,121 points.

- Duquesne will close out its homestand and open its February slate by hosting Rhode Island at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse Sunday, Feb. 1, for a Noon tip in a game that can be seen live on USA Network.

At The Helm – Dru Joyce III was named the 18th head coach in the 110-year history of Duquesne basketball March 28, 2024, and in his second year at the helm in 2025-26. He owns an overall record of 24-28 (.462) in his first head coaching job. Joyce III, a native of Akron, Ohio, spent two seasons as associate head coach for the Dukes under Keith Dambrot from 2022 to 2024, helping guide Duquesne to an overall record of 45-25 (.643), including a 20-16 (.556) mark in the Atlantic 10, during that span. The Dukes made an appearance in the 2023 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) before earning the automatic bid for the A-10 in the 2024 NCAA Championship by winning four games in five days en route to the 2024 Atlantic 10 Championship crown in Brooklyn, N.Y., at the Barclays Center. Duquesne, as a No. 11 seed, made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1977 and earned its first victory in the championship since 1969 thanks to a 71-67 win over No. 6 seed BYU in Omaha, Neb., at CHI Health Center Arena.

Scouting the Bonnies – Wednesday marks the 138th game between the two programs in a series that dates to Feb. 13, 1920 … St. Bonaventure is Duquesne's most frequent all-time opponent … The average score in the first 137 meetings? DU 71.5, SBU 70.9 (9,791 to 9,708 points, 83-point difference) … The 2025-26 season marks the 75th consecutive year the two have met and 21st straight year the two will square off in a home-and-home … DU owns more conference wins over SBU (36) than any other A-10 school … St. Bonaventure leads the series, 72-65, and has won the last two matchups after the Dukes won five consecutive in the series … Duquesne and St. Bonaventure split the 2024-25 season series, with each team winning on its home court … The two teams met again in the second round of the 2025 Atlantic 10 Championship in Washington, D.C., at Capital One Arena, with the Bonnies using a 13-1 run over the final 3:47 to earn a 64-59 victory … Guard Maximus Edwards led the Dukes with 18 points off the bench on 7-of-12 shooting from the field while also grabbing six rebounds.

Loyola Chicago Leftovers – The win over the Ramblers marked the first in the all-time series on the road for Duquesne since Feb. 18, 1993, a 79-71 victory in a game that was played at Alumni Gym ... In that contest, both the Dukes and Ramblers were members of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) ... Redshirt junior guard Brandon Hall earned his first career start in his hometown of Chicago, Ill., and in just over 20 minutes of action supplied three points, two rebounds and two assists ... The contest featured five ties and four lead changes ... The first seven games of Atlantic 10 action for the Dukes has featured an average of 5.3 ties and 5.9 lead changes per contest ... Duquesne owned a 33-32 edge in rebounding, with the Ramblers posting a 6-5 advantage on the offensive glass ... Loyola Chicago posted a 28-24 advantage in points in the paint, while the Dukes owned cushions in points off turnovers (11-7) and points on the break (12-4) ... The Ramblers shot 19.2 percent (5-of-26) from beyond the arc and in the last two A-10 road games Duquesne has held opponents to 16.7 percent (9-of-54) from deep ... The Dukes finished 7-of-14 (50%) from deep in the second half and closed 10-for-26 (38.5%) overall.

Point Break – Senior guard Tarence Guinyard was at it again in a 71-59 victory at Loyola Chicago (Jan. 24). He found his groove offensively in the second half, scoring 19 of his game-high 23 points after the break. Guinyard finished 6-for-10 from beyond the arc in the win against the Ramblers, setting a season high for triples by a member of the Dukes and becoming the first student-athlete for Duquesne to hit at least six three-pointers in a game since Tre Dinkins III finished 6-for-9 in an 85-68 win over George Mason (March 1, 2025) last season at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. Guinyard, who hit seven three-pointers last season while at Tennessee-Martin in a 77-46 victory at Southern Indiana (Dec. 21, 2024), enters Wednesday's game against St. Bonaventure three triples shy of 100 for his NCAA Division I career. In 52 games, Guinyard has averaged 1.87 three-pointers per contest, and of his team-high eight games of 20 or more points this season, five have come on the road.

Distributor – Not only does senior guard Tarence Guinyard possess the ability to score the basketball, he's just as good at creating offense, as well. For the second time this season, Guinyard missed his first career double-double by just an assist in a 74-63 victory at Fordham (Jan. 17), scoring 11 points while matching a career high with nine assists. He also registered a career-high six steals in the win over the Rams. Guinyard originally established a career high in dimes with nine in a 103-59 victory over Canisius (Dec. 22), a game in which he also contributed 21 points. Duquesne is 8-1 (.889) this season when Guinyard posts at least six assists in a game, as the Dukes suffered their first loss of the year against Dayton (Jan. 13) when he handed out six dimes. When Guinyard finishes with five assists or less, Duquesne is 3-8 (.273).

On The Block – Senior forward David Dixon has been a rim protector for the Dukes since the schedule has switched to Atlantic 10 action. In a 71-59 victory at Loyola Chicago (Jan. 24), Dixon blocked three shots, marking the sixth time in seven conference tilts he has posted at least three rejections. That stretch includes a season-high four blocks against No. 24 Saint Louis (Jan. 20). Dixon enters Wednesday's game against St. Bonaventure leading the A-10 in blocks against conference foes with an average of 2.86 per game while also producing averages of 8.3 points and 8.1 rebounds against conference opposition. During that span, Dixon set a career-high with 13 rebounds in an 89-83 double overtime victory at Davidson (Dec. 30) to open Atlantic 10 play as well as recorded his second career double-double with a season-high 15 points and 12 boards at Saint Joseph's (Jan. 7). Overall this season Dixon sits fifth in the conference with an average of 1.50 blocks per game.

The Comet – Arguably turning into the most consistent scorer for the Dukes this season is junior guard Jimmie Williams. Williams enters Wednesday's game having scored in double figures in 15 consecutive games, a stretch in which he has produced averages of 17.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.7 steals per contest while shooting 51.9 percent (95-for-183) from the floor and 84 percent (42-for-50) at the free-throw line. Included in that stretch is a career-high 28 points against No. 24 Saint Louis (Jan. 20) as well as his first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in a 71-59 victory at Loyola Chicago (Jan. 24). Williams, who has hit at least one three-pointer in each of his last 16 games, has converted 47 of his last 56 opportunities (83.9%) at the free-throw line after opening his Duquesne career just 2-for-7 at the stripe in the first three games of the season.

Three Ball, Corner Pocket – In a 71-59 win at Loyola Chicago (Jan. 24), Duquesne was successful on 38.5 percent of its opportunities from beyond the arc, finishing 10-for-26. The Dukes are 8-2 (.800) this season when draining at least 10 triples in a game and overall among Atlantic 10 leaders rank fourth in the conference with an average of 9.35 per contest. Guards Tarence Guinyard (2.30) and Jimmie Williams (2.05) enter Wednesday's game against St. Bonaventure ranked ninth and 15th, respectively, overall this season in three-point field goals made per game.

Wolf Month – Duquesne will close out the month of January Wednesday by opening a two-game homestand at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse against St. Bonaventure, and the Dukes have been led during the 2026 calendar year by their dynamic duo in guards Tarence Guinyard and Jimmie Williams. During the first six games of the month, Guinyard and Williams have combined to average 35.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 8.7 assists and 4.0 steals per game. Williams has been superb in January, averaging 18.8 points and 5.0 rebounds while converting 48.8 percent (40-for-82) of his shots from the floor, including 40 percent (14-for-35) from beyond the arc, and 82.6 percent (19-for-23) at the free-throw line. Guinyard, meanwhile, has produced averages of 16.5 points and 6.0 assists while owning an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.00. Overall this year, Guinyard has scored a total of eight more points (328-to-320) than Williams.

Defense Wins Championships – The Dukes have won 38 consecutive games dating back to the 2018-19 campaign when holding opponents under 60 points thanks to a 71-59 victory at Loyola Chicago (Jan. 24) that helped Duquesne earn its third Atlantic 10 road win. Included in that stretch is a perfect 26-0 mark in four years Dru Joyce III has been a member of the coaching staff on the Bluff, including two years as associate head coach from 2022 to 2024.
