Philadelphia, Pa. – Jaiden Glover-Toscano (28) and Derek Simpson (23) combined for 51 points to help lift Saint Joseph's to a 97-90 overtime victory over the Duquesne University men's basketball team Wednesday at Hagan Arena. The Dukes slipped to 9-7 (.562) overall during the 2025-26 season, including 1-2 (.333) in the Atlantic 10.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
Senior forward
David Dixon gave the Dukes an 86-83 edge in overtime by burying a three-pointer from the wing with 3:28 to go, but the Hawks used a 10-0 spurt to pull out the victory. Austin Williford tied the game for the 17th time with a three-pointer at the 2:48 mark of overtime, and after an offensive foul on the next possession for the Dukes, Dixon came through with a rejection of a shot by Simpson that left one second on the shot clock. Saint Joseph's (9-7 | 1-2 Atlantic 10) capitalized, with a layup on the weak side from Williford putting the Hawks in front for good. Williford scored seven points in the extra period, while a dunk from Justice Ajogbor with 23 seconds to go helped punctuate the win.
BACK-AND-FORTH
Forward
Alex Williams drove the paint with 35.6 seconds left in regulation and converted to give Duquesne an 83-80 advantage before Glover-Toscano was sent to the stripe for a pair. He hit the back end of his two opportunities, pulling the Hawks to within 83-81. SJU fouled senior guard
Tarence Guinyard on the next possession for the Dukes, but he missed the front end of the one-on-one opportunity. Time winding down, Glove-Toscano drove into the paint and produced a pull-up jumper that found the basket with 5.4 seconds left to tie the game, 83-83. The Dukes rushed down court to attempt a shot, but a three-pointer from junior guard
Jimmie Williams was short, sending Duquesne to its third overtime contest of the year.
QUOTABLE
"It just wasn't good enough," head coach
Dru Joyce III said. "Sometimes we have to play with some intelligence, too. When you don't take tendencies away from players, you're going to struggle. When you allow guys to play to their strengths and find opportunities in their comfort zone, they usually have success. We just didn't do a good job of taking away their strengths. We had a chance to extend our lead, and we didn't get a stop. You have to try and keep guys out of the paint, and the last 15 minutes of the game and overtime they probably got a paint touch almost every possession or every other possession. They went downhill and created opportunities, and we didn't guard."
