A familiar face awaits as Duquesne (6-9, 1-2) hosts its most-frequent all-time opponent in St. Bonaventure (10-4, 2-1), on Friday, Jan. 21 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN2).
The game is part of the popular Atlantic 10 ESPN Friday Night Showcase with Mike Corey & Seth Greenberg on the call.
This is the 128th meeting between the Dukes and Bonnies, whose long history includes the first televised game to originate from Pittsburgh on Feb. 11, 1952, when undefeated No. 5 Duquesne - including sophomore guard Sid Dambrot, the late father of DU head coach
Keith Dambrot - defeated the previously unbeaten No. 4 Bonnies, 69-63.
The two teams are separated by an average of 1.1 points/g. in the all-time series (9,172 total points for DU to 9,024 for SBU; average score: 72.2 to 71.1).
The Dukes are looking to get back on the winning track following back-to-back losses at Fordham and to Dayton. St. Bonaventure, the A-10 preseason favorite, is 1-1 on the road (an 80-76 win at La Salle). Duquesne, which is 3-4 at home, is 21-14 in Atlantic 10 home games under
Keith Dambrot.
TRENDING
- Freshman guard Primo Spears, a one-time A-10 Rookie of the Week (Nov. 15), has led the Dukes in scoring a team-high six times. He has scored 20 or more in two of three A-10 games (21 at UMass & 20 at Fordham).
- Fellow freshman guard Jackie Johnson III, the Jan. 10 A-10 Rookie of the Week, has scored 27 points in a game twice this season (vs. Weber State & at UMass). He is the first DU freshman to score 27 or more in multiple games since Robert Mitchell had 29 at Robert Morris and 28 at GW on the way to earning 2006-07 A-10 Rookie of the Year honors. Johnson is shooting .429 (21-of-49) from 3-point this season.
- First-year Indiana State transfer Tre Williams has pair of seven-block games (vs. Colorado at the Paradise Jam and at Fordham). Williams, an MVC All-Defensive Team member last season, recorded six of his seven blocks at Fordham in the second half.
- First-year TCU transfer Kevin Easley Jr. saw a streak of nine consecutive double-digit scoring games snapped at Fordham (7 pts.). The Indianapolis native, who leads the Dukes in rebounding (6.5 rpg.) has scored in double digits a team-high 13 times.
- First-year Mercer transfer Leon Ayers III, the Nov. 29 A-10 Player of the Week, has scored 20 or more four times.
- Junior Austin Rotroff, who has emerged as a key contributor off the bench, missed the Dayton game (foot injury). He is averaging 7.0 rebounds in 18 min/g. in his past four games.
- Duquesne's 11.3 turnovers/g. average is challenging the lowest mark in program history (11.0/g. in 2014). The Dukes set a school record for fewest turnovers in a game with three vs. New Hampshire on Dec. 11.
- Only three members of the current roster, Toby Okani, Tyson Acuff & Mike Bekelja saw action in any of the three games DU played against SBU last season.
