Dukes Fall to St. Bonaventure

Come up short in Olean

OLEAN, N.Y. - Duquesne cut a 10-point second-half deficit to one, but could get no closer at St. Bonaventure's Kyle Lofton scored 23 of his game-high 28 points in the second half to lead the Bonnies (6-1, 4-1) to a 62-48 win over the Dukes (3-5, 2-4) at the Reilly Center in Olean, N.Y.

The interior tandem of Michael Hughes and Marcus Weathers led Duquesne with 14 and 12 points respectively. Tavian Dunn-Martin added six points and seven assists for the Dukes, who assisted on 16 of 19 field goals.

DU, which was down 37-27 with under 16 minutes left, cut it to 43-42 on a Weathers 3-pointer before Lofton went to work, scoring six of the Bonnies' next eight points to make it 51-43 with 5:41 left.

Duquesne made it a five-point game on a Hughes layup, before Osun Osunniyi and Lofton scored back-to-back baskets to increase the SBU lead to 55-46 with 2:48 remaining.

Lofton hit six free throws over the final 1:15 to put the game away.

The Dukes made two of their final 11 shots after Weathers' 3-pointer.

Both teams shot 36 percent, with Duquesne going 7-of-21 from 3-point to 2-of-16 for St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies outscored the Dukes 20-3 from the foul line.

There were five ties and five lead changes in a first half that ended with St. Bonaventure up 27-23.

The Bonnies - behind seven points from Lofton - outscored the Dukes 10-4 out of the break to take a 37-27 lead, before Duquesne put the clamps on defensively, holding SBU without a field goal for over five minutes in cutting it to 39-36 on a Ryan Murphy 3-pointer.

Weathers hit Duquesne's fourth 3-pointer of the half to make it a one-point game at 43-42 at the 9:13 mark.

Duquesne will return to Pittsburgh to take on Rhode Island at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20 (ESPN+) at Kerr Fitness Center on the campus of La Roche University.
 
NOTES
  • Duquesne, which was outscored 20-3 from the line,  did not shoot its first free throw until the 14:55 mark of the second half. The three makes (3-of-9) were a Dambrot Era low.
  • Tavian Dunn-Martin's seven assists were one shy of his career high.
  • Ten players saw action for the Dukes. DU head coach Keith Dambrot has used at least 10 players in all eight games this season.
  • Duquesne's largest lead was three at 11-8 with 11:37 left in the first half ... St. Bonaventure's largest lead was the 14-point final margin... there were five ties and five lead changes before St. Bonaventure took the lead for good at 14-11 on an Alejandro Vasquez 3-pointer with 10:38 left in the first half ... Duquesne led for 2:55 ... St. Bonaventure led for 32:08.
