RICHMOND, VA. - Duquesne (9-9) cut a 23-point first half deficit to eight in the second half, but couldn't completely overcome a slow start in falling to top-seeded St. Bonaventure (14-4), 75-59, in an Atlantic 10 Championship quarterfinal game at Siegel Center on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University.
Michael Hughes led the Dukes with 15 points.
Tavian Dunn-Martin had 12 and freshman
Tyson Acuff added a career-high 12 points off the bench. Freshman
Toby Okani led DU with a career-high nine rebounds.
Osun Osunniyi had 18 points, 14 rebounds and six assists for the Bonnies, who jumped out to a 40-19 halftime lead.
The Dukes made just four of their first 21 shots and turned it over six times in falling behind 23-11.
The Bonnies followed a
Marcus Weathers 3-pointer with five-straight points to take a 30-14 lead. SBU extended the margin to 21 on back-to-back steals and layups by Jaren Holmes and Kyle Lofton.
St. Bonaventure outscored Duquesne 17-3 off 10 DU first half turnovers.
The Dukes cut the SBU lead from 20 to eight in a 1:47 span with a 12-0 run that began with an Okani 3-pointer. An Okani steal and dunk made it 47-37 at the 13:42 mark.
A technical foul on the Bonnies following the dunk allowed the Dukes to make it 47-39.
DU then missed 15 of its next 16 shots following the dunk as the Bonnies built the lead back to 65-42 with just under five minutes left.
Duquesne, which scored 40 points in the second half, shot 34 percent, while the Bonnies, who outscored the Dukes 50-30 in the paint, finished at 49 percent.
DU assisted on 10 of 21 field goals and turned it over 16 times. SBU finished with 19 assists on 32 field goals while turning it over 12 times.
NOTES
- Duquesne's 19 points were its fewest in a first half under Keith Dambrot (the low in any half under Dambrot is 17). The 21-point halftime deficit was the largest the Dukes have faced under Dambrot.
- This is the first time since 2008-12 (five in a row) that Duquesne (9-9) has finished at .500 or better for four consecutive seasons. This is the 17th straight season Keith Dambrot has finished .500 or better (including 13 seasons at Akron).
- Dambrot is the first Duquesne coach since Donald "Dudey" Moore (1949-58) to finish at .500 or better in his first four seasons on The Bluff.
- Michael Hughes, who had a team-high 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, finished his career shooting .56152, just ahead of the school record of .56136 set by Derrick Alston from 1991-94. Hughes' 177 blocks place him fourth on DU's all-time list.
- Marcus Weathers finished with 1,324 career points, including 1,014 in 79 games at Duquesne. His .514 shooting percentage ranks ninth on DU's career list.
- Freshman Tyson Acuff finished with a career-high 12 points. His previous high was 11 at Fordham.
- Freshman Toby Okani finished with a career-high nine rebounds, one more than his previous best of eight set at Dayton.
- Duquesne's largest lead was three, at 7-4 with 16:06 left in the first half ... St. Bonaventure's largest lead was 23, the last of which came at 65-42 with 4:29 left ... there were two ties and two lead changes before SBU took the lead for good on a Osun Osunniyi layup that made it 8-7 with 15:21 left in the first half ... Duquesne led for 1:45 ... St. Bonaventure led for 35:44.
