Dukes Fall to Flyers

Spears, Ayers III and Williams finish with 12 points each

PITTSBURGH - DaRon Holmes II scored 18 points and Kobe Elvis added 16 to lead hot-shooting Dayton (11-6, 3-1) to a 72-52 win over Duquesne's (6-9, 1-2) on Saturday afternoon at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.

Primo Spears, Leon Ayers III and Tre Williams led the Dukes with 12 points each. Kevin Easley Jr. added 10 for DU.

Dayton shot 53 percent, including 8-of-18 from the 3-point arc.

The Dukes, who went 5-of-19 from the arc, finished at 40 percent.

Duquesne trailed 14-10 before going scoreless for 3:30 as Dayton built a 24-12 lead. The UD advantage, which reached 13, was 40-28 at the half.

Dayton shot 55 percent with six 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes.

Duquesne managed just 11 points in the first 12 minutes of the second half as the Dayton lead reached 64-39.

Duquesne continues a stretch of four-of-five at home when it hosts Atlantic 10 preseason favorite St. Bonaventure on Friday, Jan. 21 at 7:00 p.m. The game will air nationally on ESPN2 as part of the popular A-10 ESPN Friday Night Showcase.  

NOTES
  • The Dukes, who were playing without injured forward Austin Rotroff, were outscored 16-4 off the bench. Duquesne didn't register a bench point until a Tyson Acuff jumper with 6:53 left.
  • Dayton finished with 19 assists on 31 field goals. Duquesne assisted on eight of its 21 field goals.
  • Tre Williams blocked a pair of shots for DU.
  • Dayton's largest lead was 25, at 64-39 with 7:44 left ... Duquesne's largest lead was at 7-4 with 16:42 left in the first half ... there were three ties and one lead change before Dayton took the lead for good on a Holmes dunk that made it 9-7 with 15:56 left in the first half ... Dayton led for 35:56 ... Duquesne led for 1:42.
