PREVIEW: @DuqWBB at GW, Mason

PITTSBURGH – After 25 days since its last game, the Duquesne women's basketball team is set to resume action this weekend on the road at George Washington and George Mason. The Dukes (2-7, 1-4) are set to battle the Colonials (4-12, 1-9) on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and will face the Patriots (3-14, 0-10) on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

THE SERIES

  • George Washington, Duquesne's most played opponent, leads the all-time series 55-15. The Colonials picked up a pair of wins against the Dukes a season ago. Duquesne head coach Dan Burt has three wins against GW, most recently a 64-53 victory on Feb. 27, 2019.
  • Duquesne has won all eight contests against the Patriots since Mason joined the Atlantic 10 in Dan Burt's first season on the Bluff. Overall, the Dukes lead the series 9-2, including a perfect 6-0 mark in the Steel City. Last season, Duquesne earned an 84-62 win on Jan. 22, 2020 behind 20 points from Laia Sole, 18 points from Libby Bazelak, 14 points from Laia Sole and 10 points from Nina Aho in a balanced offensive performance.

STAT CHECK

  • Megan McConnell has shined this season, particularly in Atlantic 10 play since becoming a starter. She ranks 12th in scoring against A-10 foes with season with 13.2 points per game, fifth in assists (4.2) and boasts the second-best assist to turnover ratio. Among all freshmen, she leads the nation in assist to turnover ratio and ranks 12th nationally.
  • Classmate Tess Myers has also impressed during her freshman campaign, ranking 24th overall and fifth among freshmen in 3-point field goal percentage (43.9%).
  • Over her past two games, Diamond Bragg has found her footing in the scoring column with 15 points against Richmond and 11 points against La Salle. Over these past two games, Bragg is averaging a team-best 8.0 rebounds per game and is tied with McConnell with 5.0 assists per contest.
  • Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference First Team and All-Defensive team selection Libby Bazelak made her season-debut in Duquesne's latest game against La Salle. Bazelak, took two field goal attempts and grabbed a rebound and dished an assist in 11 minutes of action.
  • The Dukes five-game losing streak is the longest of the Dan Burt era, as both a head coach and assistant coach. Its longest streak since Dan Durkin fell in 11 consecutive games to end his final season on the Bluff in 2006-07.

SCOUTING GW: The Colonials are 4-12 on the season and are currently on a five-game losing streak after beating George Mason on Jan. 17. The Colonials were on pause last weekend, with games against UMass and Rhode Island being postponed. Jasmine Whitney ranks 11th in the country in steals (47), 19th in steals per game (2.94), 35th in assist/turnover ratio (2.45), and 78th in assists per game (4.4).

SCOUTING MASON: The Patriots are currently on a 10-game losing streak in A-10 play, falling to Fordham (72-57), Davidson (62-57), Dayton (59-37) VCU (60-41) and George Washington (67-47) to begin conference play. Marika Korpinen leads Mason in points per game (10.3) and assists per game (2.7), while ranking third on the team in rebounding (5.5). In non-conference play, the Patriots earned wins over Navy (72-68), Longwood (77-65) and Delaware State (69-46), while falling to Pittsburgh (72-57), James Madison (89-70) William & Mary (48-43) and Ole Miss (64-34).
