ON WRIGHT STATE
The Raiders opened the season with a split at the Hensor/Zaher Classic - a 3-1 win at Portland followed by a 4-0 defeat at Oregon State. Eric Lynch (2 assists), Peguy Ngatcha (1 goal, 1 assist) and Sam DeRoy (1 goal) were all named to the All-Tournament Team. WSU is coming off a 2-1 double-overtime win at Cincinnati on Friday.
This is the home opener for Wright State. The Raiders were 3-5-1 on Alumni Field (12-8-1 overall) last season. Wright State was picked to finish in a tie for first with Oakland, the defending 2015 Horizon League Tournament Champions, in the 2016 Horizon League preseason poll.
THE SERIES
This is the second meeting between the Dukes and Raiders. WSU won 1-0 in overtime on Sept. 19, 2014 in Dayton. Current roster members Jason Twum, Fredrik Borenstein and Chris Alescio all started in that game. Nigel Seidu, Bryan Fegley and George Poppas saw action off the bench.
DUKES THIS SEASON
No. 17 Kentucky got a goal from Noah Hutchins in the 48th minute to defeat DU 1-0 in Lexington on August 30. Evan Kozlowski recorded three saves for the Dukes. DU was outshot 17-8 (4-2 on goal) in the match. DU got a goal from Olav Hovstad in the 100th minute to defeat Saint Francis U, 2-1, in the season opener on August 26. The Dukes rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to post the win.
QUICK HITS
This is the 22nd season for the Duquesne men's soccer program.
The Dukes return seven starters from last year's 6-10-2 team.
This is the second consecutive road game for the Dukes who went 4-4-2 away from home last season. DU went 2-3-1 in non-conference road games a year ago. The two non-conference road wins tied the school record (it was the sixth time a DU team posted a pair of non-conference road wins).
Duquesne is 18-43-14 all-time in non-conference road games, including a 3-11-3 mark under Brooks.
The 2015 Dukes finished strong with wins in three of their last four Atlantic 10 regular season games to earn a spot in the A-10 Championship.
DU is looking to replace First Team All-Atlantic 10 forward Colin Phillips who accounted for 13 of DU's 23 goals and 31 of the team's 67 points last season. Phillips, who was also an Academic All-America, ranked among the nation's Top 7 in goals (t7th), points (t7th), goals/g (t5th) and points/g (t6th).
Senior Evan Kozlowski, who posted three saves in 99:09 minutes in the opening day 2-1 win over Saint Francis U and followed that with three more saves in a 1-0 defeat at Kentucky, has been the early-season replacement for goalkeeper Sam Frymier, who logged nearly 6,000 minutes in net over the past four seasons.
Junior midfielder Fredrik Borenstein is DU's top returning point-getter with seven last season.
Senior D/M Chris Alescio scored his sixth career goal in the opener to tie Borenstein for most career goals on the current Dukes roster.
Borenstein and senior midfield/forward Bryan Fegley are the top returning goal scorers with two apiece in 2015.
Defender Bendik Hellstroem (50 career matches, team-high 46 career starts) and Alescio (team-high 54 career matches with 43 starts) are the two most-experienced returnees.
Duquesne returns six goal scorers in Borenstein (2), Fegley (2), Hellstroem (1), Peace Drevitch (1), Diego Vieira (1) and Ian Larson (1). The fivesome accounted for eight of DU's 23 goals. Chris Alescio and first-year New Mexico transfer Olav Hovstad have DU's two goals this season.
