Duquesne (5-2-1) puts its undefeated home record on the line when it hosts Buffalo (8-2) on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m. The Dukes, who are 4-0 on Rooney Field, welcome a Bulls squad that is 4-2 on the road. Buffalo was among "others receiving votes" in this week's NSCAA Top 25.
THE SERIES
This is the ninth meeting between the Dukes and Bulls in a series that dates back to 2003. Duquesne leads the series 5-2-1, including a 4-1 advantage in games played on Rooney Field. Buffalo's lone win at DU came on Sept. 30, 2007 (1-0). The Dukes have won the past three meetings at home. Duquesne won the last meeting between the two by a 3-0 score on Sept. 21, 2014 in Pittsburgh.
QUICK HITS
- This is the 22nd season for the Duquesne men's soccer program.
- The Dukes began the week with an NCAA RPI of 16. The next-best RPI by an Atlantic 10 school is Saint Louis at No. 40. George Washington (50) is the only other A-10 school with an RPI under 100.
- Buffalo is 60th in this week's RPI.
- All eight of Duquesne's games have been decided by one (or fewer) goals.
- DU has limited seven of its eight opponents to one or fewer goals.
- The Dukes, with senior Evan Kozlowski in goal, have posted four consecutive shutouts. The last time DU posted four shutouts in a row was in the first four games of the 2013 season, which was head coach Chase Brooks' first on the Bluff. The 2016 Dukes are one clean sheet shy of tying the school record for consecutive shutouts (5), set in 2000.
- Duquesne has outshot its last four opponents (Canisius, at Cleveland State, Robert Morris and at Navy) 59 to 43.
- Four Duquesne's five wins have come in dramatic fashion, including three on Rooney Field:
* Aug. 26 vs. Saint Francis U - Olav Hovstad scored in the 100th minute to give the Dukes a 2-1 come-from-behind OT win
* Sept. 9 vs. Wofford - DU scored twice in the final 5:04 - with Fredrik Borenstein netting the game-winner in 89th minute - of a 2-1 win
* Sept. 11 vs. Canisius - Austin Stout scored with five seconds left in the first overtime to give Duquesne a 1-0 win
* Sept. 20 at Cleveland State - Freshman Jallah Acqui scored in the 93rd minute in a 1-0 win
- DU's three overtime wins are the team's most since 2005. The '05 Atlantic 10 regular season co-champion Dukes (13-5) posted a 3-2 overtime record.
- The Dukes followed the SFU game with a 1-0 loss at then-No. 17 Kentucky on August 30. DU nearly came back from a 3-0 halftime deficit in a 3-2 defeat at Wright State on Labor Day. The Dukes got goals from Zach Hall in the 61st minute and Borenstein in the 73rd, but could not find the back of the net again before time expired. DU has won three in a row since the near comeback at WSU.
- Duquesne's first three opponents: Saint Francis U (2nd in Northeast), then-No. 17 Kentucky (1st in Conference USA) and Wright State (T1st in Horizon) were all picked first or second in their conference's preseason poll.
- Duquesne is 46-18-8 all-time in non-conference home games, including a 13-3 mark under head coach Chase Brooks.
- Buffalo, which won its first four road games, is 4-2 away from home. The Bulls are coming off a 3-0 loss at Binghamton on Sept. 24.
- Duquesne is the second Atlantic 10 opponent on the Buffalo schedule. The Bulls defeated local rival St. Bonaventure 2-1 at home on Sept. 21.
- The Dukes are outscoring opponents 9-2 in the second half and overtime.
- Balance has been the early-season theme for the Dukes who have eight players with two or more points, and none with more than six. DU's nine goals have come from six players: Fredrik Borenstein (3), Chris Alescio, Olav Hovstad, Zach Hall, Austin Stout and Jallah Acqui (plus one own goal).
- Freshman Ryan Landry is tied with Bryan Fegley for the team lead with two assists, including a feed on Olav Hovstad's game-winner in the win over Saint Francis U.
- Junior midfielder Fredrik Borenstein, DU's top returning point-getter with seven last season, leads the team with three goals and six points. The Norway native also leads the team in career goals with nine. Senior Chris Alescio ranks second on the team with six career goals, including one this season.
- Freshman Jallah Acqui was named A-10 co-Rookie of the Week on Monday. The Upper Darby, Pa. native was honored for his game-winning goal in the 93rd minute of DU's 1-0 win at Cleveland State on Sept. 20.
- DU goalkeeper Evan Kozlowski, who put together an MVP performance at the Sept. 9 & 11 Duquesne Invitational, has posted four-straight shutouts. The redshirt senior has posted a total of 11 saves in the wins over Canisius (1-0), at Cleveland State (1-0 in OT) and vs. Robert Morris (1-0) and the 0-0 2OT tie at Navy. The last team to score on the Dukes was Wofford in the 58th minute on Sept. 9.
