Duquesne, which returns seven starters from last year's 6-10-2 team, kicks off the 2016 season vs. Saint Francis U on Friday, August 26 at 7:00 p.m. on Rooney Field. The match is the first of nine at home for the Dukes. This is also the opener for the Red Flash.
THE SERIES
This is the 16th meeting between the Dukes and Red Flash, with Duquesne leading the overall series 6-5-4. In matches played in Pittsburgh, the Dukes hold a 3-2-2 advantage. DU had a two-game series streak snapped last season in a 1-0 defeat at SFU.
QUICK HITS
• This is the 22nd season for the Duquesne men's soccer program.
• The Dukes are 11-8-2 all-time in season openers, including a 2-0-1 record under fourth-year head coach Chase Brooks.
• This is the first time since 2013 that DU is opening at home (3-0 win over Longwood in Brooks' debut on Aug. 30, 2013).
• DU went an uncharacteristic 2-5 at home last year, despite being even in goals scored (10-10). Duquesne is 100-54-17 (.635) all-time, including a 42-18-8 mark in non-conference games, on Rooney Field. DU is 9-3 in non-conference home games under Brooks.
• The 2015 Dukes finished strong with wins in three of their last four Atlantic 10 regular season games to earn a spot in the A-10 Championship.
• DU is looking to replace First Team All-Atlantic 10 forward Colin Phillips who accounted for 13 of DU's 23 goals and 31 of the team's 67 points last season. Phillips, who was also an Academic All-America, ranked among the nation's Top 7 in goals (t7th), points (t7th), goals/g (t5th) and points/g (t6th).
• The Dukes are also looking to replace goalkeeper Sam Frymier, who logged nearly 6,000 minutes in net over the past four seasons.
• Junior midfielder Fredrik Borenstein is DU's top returning point-getter with seven last season. Borenstein also has the most career goals among returnees with six. Senior D/M Chris Alescio is second on the team with five career goals.
• Borenstein and senior midfield/forward Bryan Fegley are the top returning goal scorers with two apiece in 2015.
• Defender Bendik Hellstroem (48 career matches, team-high 44 career starts) and Alescio (team-high 52 career matches with 41 starts) are the two most-experienced returnees.
• Duquesne returns six goal scorers in Borenstein (2), Fegley (2), Hellstroem (1), Peace Drevitch (1), Diego Vieira (1) and Ian Larson (1). The fivesome accounted for eight of DU's 23 goals.
