Duquesne (3-7-1) heads to Ann Arbor to face Michigan (5-3-3) on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m., in the Dukes' final non-conference game of 2015. This is the first men's soccer meeting between Duquesne and Michigan.
Duquesne is 1-6-1 all time against the schools who make up the current Big Ten (0-2 vs. Maryland, 0-2-1 vs. Michigan State, 1-0 vs. Ohio State and 0-2 vs. Penn State), with all eight meetings coming on the road. The Dukes are 1-4-1 against schools who were in the Big Ten at the time of the match (DU's two games against Maryland came when the Terps were in the Atlantic Coast Conference).
Duquesne's first match against a Big Ten school was in the 1997 season opener at Michigan State. The Dukes - in just their third season as a Division I program - tied the Spartans 0-0. Duquesne, which was on its way to a 13-3-3 record and Atlantic 10 regular season co-championship, beat Ohio State 1-0 in Columbus on Sept. 21, 2003.
QUICK HITS
• Duquesne, in its 21st season as a program, enters the Michigan match 169-170-44 all time (91-92-16 in Atlantic 10 play).
• DU, which entered the season 4-11-3 on the road under third-year head coach Chase Brooks, is 3-2-1 on the road this year. Michigan is 3-2-1 at home.
• The Dukes and Wolverines share one common opponent in Niagara. DU defeated the Purple Eagles, 3-1, at Niagara Falls, N.Y. on Aug. 30. U-M beat Niagara 2-1 in double overtime at home on Sept. 6.
• Michigan is undefeated in its last five games with wins over Northwestern (3-0), at Oakland (4-1), at #21 Penn State (2-0) and ties against Wisconsin (3-3 in 2OT) and at #7 Notre Dame (1-1 in 2OT).
• The Wolverines are outscoring opponents by an average of 1.73 to 1.00 goals per game. U-M has held nine of its first 11 opponents to under two goals.
• Duquesne has been outscored by just three goals (15-12) through its first 11 matches.
• Senior tri-captain Colin Phillips leads the Dukes in points (17), goals (7), assists (3), shots (33) and shots on goal (12). Phillips has three two-goal games this season (at Niagara, vs. No. 12 Oregon State and at La Salle). Phillips, who had three goals and an assist in DU's two games last week, was the first player to score on OSU (the Beavers entered the Sept. 11 match unscored upon in their first three games). He scored both his goals in a 3-2 2OT win at La Salle in a 12-minute span of the second half. Phillips leads the Atlantic 10 in total goals, total points, goals/g. (0.64) and points/g. (1.55).
• Two of DU's 12 goals have been scored by true freshmen - both coming on their first career college shot attempt. Ian Larson netted the game-winner in the 71st minute at Colgate on Sept. 20 and Peace Drevitch gave the Dukes a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute on Sept. 27 at Robert Morris.
• Freshman Noah Mehta is tied for second on the team lead with two assists. He had one in the opening day 3-1 win at Niagara and added another in the 3-2 loss to Oregon State.
• The Dukes started four true freshmen in the A-10 opener vs. Dayton on Oct. 3: Noah Mehta (M), Matthew Rochowski (M), Brandon Walbert (M) and Peace Drevitch (D). Mehta, Walbert and Drevitch also started at La Salle. Rochowski, Walbert and Drevitch started Saturday vs. Fordham.
• DU is +15 on corner kicks (69-54) through 11 games, Michigan is +29 (81-52) in 11 matches.
• NEXT UP: The Dukes return to conference play at VCU on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
