PITTSBURGH - In the 33rd annual City Game, the Duquesne women's basketball team defeated Pittsburgh 87-77 at the Palumbo Center on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Dukes (5-3) extended their winning streak to five games. Pitt fell to 5-3 overall.

Four Duquesne players scored in double-figures, led by Deva'Nyar Workman with 21 points off the bench. April Robinson recorded her second career double-double with 19 points and tied her career-high with 11 assists. Amadea Szamosi scored 15 and Jose-Ann Johnson 12 in the win.

Pitt's Brianna Kiesel scored a game-high 23 and Yacine Diop added 22 for the Panthers.

The first half saw six ties and 11 lead changes. After a 3-pointer by Pitt's Fred Potvin made the score 11-10 in favor of the Panthers, the Dukes scored six straight points to take a 16-11 lead. However, Pitt came back to tie the score less than a minute later at 16-16 with 12:27 remaining.

With the Panthers leading 29-26 with 5:41 remaining, Johnson's jumper started a 9-0 run that gave the Dukes its largest lead of the half - six points with 2:55 left. Pitt would score the next five points until Workman's layup ended the first half scoring with the Dukes leading 37-34.

Duquesne scored the first nine points of the 2nd half and took a 12 point lead at 46-34 with 17:51 remaining. A 3-pointer by Emilie Gronas with 9:44 left gave the Dukes its largest lead of the game, 17 points at 65-48. Pitt responded with a 17-7 run over the next 1:28 to make it a seven point game at 72-65 with 5:40 remaining. Robinson stopped the run with a 3-pointer and Olivia Bresnahan followed with a basket to put the Dukes up 11 with 4:09 to play.

The Dukes would maintain a double-figure lead for the final 1:37 of the game.

"That's the City Game, a game that is filled with a lot of emotion," said head coach Dan Burt. "It is really good for girl's basketball in Western Pennsylvania that we have two women's programs that battle so hard against one another and really create a great atmosphere."

"When you start 2 point guards that are as good as April and Liv and you surround them with shooters like Belma Nurkic, Dev Workman and Emilie Gronas, it just opens up so much."

The Dukes hit a season-high 11 3-pointers with Robinson leading with three.

"I thought that April play very well today and she did it against a played that I think will be in the WNBA next year in Brianna Kiesel. Although she had some uncharacteristic turnovers today, April is having an all-conference type year. She's our catalyst, she makes us go offensively and defensively."

Robinson has had five or more assists in three of her last four games and has scored in double-figures in each game this season.

"We're excited to play West Virginia. We think it's a good matchup for us," concluded Coach Burt.

Duquesne's next game is at West Virginia on Wednesday. The Mountaineers, who are the defending Big XII champions, are ranked #24 in the AP Poll and #21 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The game will be televised on ROOT Sports Pittsburgh.
