PITTSBURGH - Four players scored in double-figures as the Duquesne women's basketball team, sporting pink uniforms, defeated Richmond 59-54 in the Dukes' Play4Kay game at the Palumbo Center on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Dukes improve to 19-4 overall and 8-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Spiders fall to 12-13 overall and 2-7 in the A-10 loop.
April Robinson and Jocelyn Floyd each scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Vanessa Abel scored 12 and Orsi Szecsi added 11 for DU. Floyd had a game-high six steals.
Kristina King scored a game-high 21 points for UR. Rachel Bilney scored 10 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Duquesne started off the game shooting 2-for10 and trailed early 8-4. The Dukes would have to play from behind until Oditte Odisho's 3-pointer with 9:52 to play in the first half tied the score at 14-14. Down 20-19 with 6:06 left in the half, Szecsi's jumper gave DU its first lead since 2-0. The started a 12-4 run over the next 5:52, giving Duquesne a 30-23 lead. King's layup closed out the first half scoring with the Dukes on top 30-25.
Back-to-back jumpers from Abel gave DU its largest lead of the game - nine points at 15:50 of the second half, making the score 36-27. Richmond would claw back and get within two points of tying the game twice - the last with 10:43 remaining on a pair of Keri Soppe foul shots that made the score 41-39.
A King 3-pointer with 1:08 made it a two-possession game at 59-54, but that would be final basket of the contest.
As a team, the Dukes shot 41.3 percent from the floor. However, only made it to the foul line a season-low seven times, converting three for 42.9 percent.
The Dukes close out its three-game homestand on Wednesday when they host Saint Joseph's (16-6, 7-1 A-10). Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
GAME NOTES
- The win snaps a two-game losing streaking against Richmond
- Wumi Agunbiade, who was honored in a pregame ceremony for scoring her 1,000th sareer point, scored five points, which brings here within one point of tying Chrissy Stough for 16th place on Duquesne's all-time scoring list
- Floyd's six steals gives her 105 on the season - she recorded a school record 121 last season
- In last season's game, UR's Becca Wann recorded a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds - this afternoon, the Dukes held her to nine points and three rebounds
- The senior class of Abel, Floyd, Ahjah Hall and Carly Vendemia need two wins to become the all-time winningest class in program history
- In addition this being the Dukes' Play4Kay game, it was also Girls and Women in Sports Day
