Women's Basketball Defeats Rhode Island 63-42

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Duquesne women's basketball team ended its three-game losing streak after defeating Rhode Island 63-42 on Wednesday evening. With the victory, the senior class of Alex Gensler and Vanessa Abel became the all-time winningest senior class in program history.

Gensler led all scorers with 13 points for the Dukes (16-8, 4-5 A-10). Wumi Agunbiade was one rebound shy of a double-double finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds. In her first-ever start, Carly Vendemia scored 10 as did Jocelyn Floyd. Belma Nurkic added 10 off the bench and was 3-of-4 from beyond-the-arc.

Ashley Rivera scored a team-high 11 for Rhode Island (1-23, 0-9 A-10) who dropped their 21st consecutive game.

URI did not score in its first eight trips up the floor as the Dukes got out to an 11-0 start. By the midway point of the first half DUQ was leading 20-4, with seven different players scoring. After Floyd made three straight baskets, the Dukes saw its largest lead of the half - 23 points at 29-6 at the 7:30 mark. The Rams would cut the deficit to 16 points by halftime as the Dukes went into the intermission leading 37-21.

By the 13-minute mark of the second half, Rhode Island cut the Duquesne lead to 13 points at 43-30. However, Duquesne would go on an 11-0 run to take a 24-point lead at 54-30. The closest the Rams would get is 20 points with 1:52 remaining.

The Dukes return home tonight and will face Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. It is a Buck Day presented by Smallman Street Deli. All tickets, hot dogs, and drinks are just $1.
