Duquesne University soccer players Ben Horner (Butler, Pa./Butler), Stefan Lundberg (Lower Burrell, Pa./Kiski Area) and Joshua Patterson (Bowie, Md./Bowie) were recently named to the 2010 ESPN Academic All-District II Men's Soccer Team as voted on by the district's sports information directors.
Horner receives his second Academic All-District laurel after being named to the first team as a junior. He has played in all 17 contests this season, making 16 starts and assisted on goals in wins over Army and George Washington. For his career, he is ranked among Duquesne's all-time leaders in shots, assists and matches started. A finance major with a 3.95 cumulative grade point average, he is also a two-time Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference honoree.
Lundberg is among Duquesne's all-time most prolific scorers, currently sitting sixth in career goals with 14. He is ninth all-time in career points with 38 and has tallied four game-winning goals at Duquesne. Two of those game-winners came this season in victories over Saint Joseph's and George Washington. He is currently second on the team in scoring with 11 points on four goals and three assists. An english major with a 3.90 gpa, he too, is a two-time Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference honoree.
Patterson has tallied three goals for the Red and Blue this season, all of which were game-winners. The team's leading scorer in 2009 with six goals and 12 points, he is already fifth all-time at Duquesne with seven career game-winning goals. This year's game-winners came on a penalty kick against Army and against Atlantic 10 foes Xavier and Richmond. Patterson has a 3.79 cumulative gpa as a sports marketing major.
To be eligible for this award, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. He/she must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at the institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution. Sports information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to district teams prior to being voted upon on the national level. CoSIDA has been selecting Academic All-America teams since 1952.
CoSIDA's District II covers Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
