Women's Basketball Defeats Miami, Ohio 91-65

OXFORD, Ohio - The Duquesne women's basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season after a 91-65 win over Miami, Ohio on Wednesday afternoon.

Wumi Agunbiade recorded her first career double-double with career-highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds. Alex Gensler also scored a career-best with 23 points. Orsi Szecsi added 11 points off the bench

Hannah Robertson led Miami, Ohio with 13 points.

Duquesne, who led from start-to-finish, opened the contest on a 12-0 run fueled by a pair of 3-pointers by Gensler.

The RedHawks were held scoreless until the 16:41 mark until Haley Robertson connected on a jumper.

Miami, Ohio would begin to chip away at the Duquesne lead as a Hannah Robertson 3-pointer at the 7:35 mark cut the DU lead to 3 points at 22-19.

Jocelyn Floyd turned her fifth steal of the half into a a coast-to-coast score to give the Dukes its largest lead of the half at 22 points - 49-27 with 25 seconds remaining until halftime.

Erica Almady's put back off a Maggie Boyer miss at buzzer closed out the first half scoring.

The Dukes started the second half just like the first half, with a Gensler 3-pointer. An Agunbiade 3-pointer from the top of the key gave the Dukes a 30 point lead with 18:11 to play.

The Dukes would lead by as many as 33 points after a Carly Vendemia jumper with 16 minutes left in the second half.

Agunbiade, who had 10 points and 12 rebounds by halftime, grabbed 11 of her 16 boards on the offensive side. Gensler finished 7of-9 from the floor including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Vanessa Abel added six assists - one short of tying her career-best.

The Dukes hit 50 percent from 3-points range, making a season-high 9-of-18.

"This is a great win for us against a good team," said head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio. "We also improved our rebounding and were very good defensively. Our defense created a lot of our offense and that was the difference in the game."

The Dukes scored 27 points off Miami turnovers and out rebounded the RedHawks 50-30 while forcing 20 MU turnovers.

"Our offensive execution was key as well. We were able to get people open and set screens and penetrate," added McConnell-Serio.

The Dukes scored 34 points in the paint and added 27 second chance points.

Next up for the Dukes will be Robert Morris on Sunday. Tipoff will be at noon at the Sewall Center.

  • Gensler's previous career-high was a 22 point effort at Richmond last season ... she tied her career-high with seven field goals (Davidson, 11/27/09) ... she also set a new career-high by shooting 77.7 percent, topping her previous high of 75 percent (Mount St. Mary's, 11/18/09)

  • Floyd's previous career-high in steal was five versus Penn last season
