Box Score
Duquesne's men's soccer team scored two early goals and held on for a 2-1 victory over visiting Richmond Friday evening on Rooney Field. For the second straight match, Simon Gomez and Joshua Patterson were the goal-scorers.
Gomez opened the scoring in the 14th minute off a Dave Cassanelli pass to give DU a 1-0 lead. Just 63 seconds later, Gomez fired a shot that was saved by the Richmond keeper and Patterson grabbed the rebound and drilled it into the right corner of the net for a 2-0 advantage which held for the next 51 minutes.
Richmond played inspired soccer in the second half, outshooting Duquesne, 9-3 and found the net in the 66th minute to cut its deficit in half. However, the Duquesne defense held tight and kept the Spiders out of the net the rest of the way.
Colin Thorp posted his second straight victory in goal to improve to 2-0. The Dukes improved to 7-7-2 on the season and 3-4-0 in Atlantic 10 play to keep their A-10 Tournament hopes alive.
The Red and Blue return to action on Sunday, Oct. 31 as they host George Washington at 1:00 p.m. on Rooney Field in the home season finale. Before the contest, seniors Cory Bachstein, Ben Horner, Stefan Lundberg, Gavin Stabbe, Chris Torres and Jamie Waugh will be honored.
