Duquesne's men's soccer team opened the 2009 season with a 1-0, overtime victory over visiting Niagara Tuesday evening on Rooney Field. Freshman Joshua Patterson scored the game-winning goal in the 99th minute.

The Dukes controlled play for most of the game, outshooting the Purple Eagles, 24-7, but it was a save by junior goalkeeper Chris Torres that gave the Dukes the spark they needed.

In the 96th minute, DU was called for a foul in the box and Niagara was granted a penalty kick. Torres stopped the p-k, shifting the momentum towards the Dukes again as Patterson knocked home the winner off an assist from sophomore Dave Cassanelli.

Junior Ben Horner tied a school record with eight shots while sophomore Anthony Caruso followed with six.

The Dukes return to action on Friday, Sept. 4 as they travel to Michigan State for a 5:00 pm contest.
