Duquesne University junior soccer player Ben Horner (Butler, Pa./Butler) was recently named to the 2009 CoSIDA Academic All-District II Men's Soccer Team as voted on by the district's sports information directors. He will now be placed on the national ballot.
Horner, who has started all 17 games for the Dukes, leads the team with five assists and is tied for second on the squad in scoring with seven points. A 2008 Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference honoree, he scored the lone Duquesne goal in a 1-1 tie with La Salle, assisted on the game-winning goal versus Manhattan and also had a helper in a win over Niagara. Horner boasts a 3.95 cumulative grade point average as a finance major.
To be eligible for this award, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. He/she must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at the institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution. Sports information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to district teams prior to being voted upon on the national level. CoSIDA has been selecting Academic All-America teams since 1952.
CoSIDA's District II covers Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
