Dukes Suffer 81-69 Loss to Penn State

Three Dukes notched double-figures but it wasn't enough as Duquesne suffered an 81-62 loss to visiting Penn State Tuesday evening at the Palumbo Center. Aiga Bautre tied the game lead with 18 points followed by 15 points from Malgorzata Flaga and Loui Hall with 11 points. Nicole Sinclair led the Dukes rebounding with six boards. Penn State's Amanda Brown led the Lady Lions with 18 points and eight rebounds.

Penn State opened the game on a 10-0 run as the Dukes went 0-6 from the field before Hall's bucket at 15:37 put the Red & Blue on the board. The Lady Lions hit six unanswered for a 16-2 edge with 13:39 ticking. Flaga snapped a 2:50 scoring drought, but poor shooting plagued the Dukes who were just 2-13 from the field (.154). Penn State led by as many as 18 points (26-8) in the first half and kept the Dukes at bay as they could only get within a 13-point reach with the last being a 21-34 deficit. The Dukes shot just .286 (8-28) in the first frame to Penn State's .552 (16-29).

Sinclair opened the second half's scoring and sparked a 21-9 run to open the frame. Hall notched eight straight for the Dukes over a 2:18 and Bautre hit eight straight, which included two three pointers, to bring the Red & Blue to a 45-51 reach with 13:10 ticking. The Lady Lions's Mashea Williams hit five of seven unanswered points for a 58-45 edge at 11:42 and they would extend the drive to a 16-2 run for a 67-47 advantage as 6:39 remained. Duquesne would not get closer than a 15-point reach thereafter as PSU took the 81-62 final. The Dukes had a solid effort from the field in the second half hitting 16-31 for a .516 accuracy.

Penn State out-rebounded Duquesne 43-25 and out-shot the Dukes .519 (28-54) to .414(24-58) for the game. Duquesne was 9-21 (.429) from the three and shot just .417 (5-12) from the line. Penn State hit 20-26 from the charity stripe.

Duquesne returns to action this Friday as they face Oakland at 5:00 pm in the opening game of the Miami Tournament in Florida.
