Wade Jean Announces Class of 11 Newcomers

Fresh off an Atlantic 10 Championship runner-up performance, Duquesne University head soccer coach Wade Jean has announced his roster additions for the 2003 season. Included in the crop of 11 newcomers are nine freshman and two sophomore transfers while seven of the 11 student-athletes hail from Western Pennsylvania.

The nine freshmen joining the Dukes are midfielders Brian Bartek (Jefferson Hills, PA/Thomas Jefferson), Andrew Gattens (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional), Jared Helfrich (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) and James Reinecker (Reading, PA/Exeter Township), goalkeeper Joshua Miller (North Versailles, PA/East Allegheny) and forwards Doug Cortina (Skillman, NJ/The Hun School), Garrett Mackenzie (Carnegie, PA/Chartiers Valley), Dan Morton (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) and Sean Park (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield). Transferring to Duquesne are sophomore forwards Scott Gibson (New Marske, Redcar (England)/Huntcliff Sec. (Glasgow Univ.-Scotland) and Steve Mellor (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy/Appalachian State).

Bartek was a All-WPIAL and All-State selection as a senior. He was also a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Player to Watch and a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Elite 11. His junior and senior year teams won the WPIAL championship while his senior year team also captured the state title. In addition, he was a member of the Beadling club team that was five-time state champions, a regional champion in 2000 and a regional finalist in 2002.

Cortina was a three-time New Jersey All-Prep Team selection. In addition, he was named the New Jersey Prep School Player of the Year after leading all NJ preps in scoring.

Gattens was an All-WPIAL selection as well as the WPIAL Section 3 Player of the Year as a senior. He was his team's leading scorer and a five-time ODP starter for the state team.

Gibson is from England and is a transfer from Glasgow University in Scotland. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Helfrich was an All-WPIAL choice as a senior in addition to being named the section MVP. As a senior he scored 17 goals and added 11 assists and was a two-time all-section choice, a Post-Gazette North All-Star and a two-time Tribune-Review North All-Star.

Mackenzie was a two-time All-WPIAL selection and a two-time All-Section choice. He helped lead his team to a WPIAL championship as a junior. He too was on the Beadling ODP team that was five-time state champions, a regional champion in 2000 and a regional finalist in 2002. He is the brother of Duquesne junior midfielder Derek.

Mellor is a sophomore transfer from Appalachian State where he was named to the All-Freshman Third Team by College Soccer News and the All-Southern Conference Second Team last year. He was fifth on the team in scoring with 15 points on five goals and five assists, including two game-winning goals.

Miller was a two-time All-Section choice, a two-time All-WPIAL selection and the 2002 Tribune-Review East Player of the Year. During his high school career, his teams won a WPIAL championship in 2000, two section titles and were WPIAL finalists and state semi-finalists. Miller also set a school and WPIAL record on the football field kicking a 55-yard field goal as a senior, his only season of football. He was also on the Beadling ODP team that was five-time state champions, a regional champion in 2000 and a regional finalist in 2002.

Morton played on three-district championship teams, three metro championship teams and the 2001 state championship team during his high school tenure. He also played on the 2001 Super-Clubs national team and was named to the All-Metro Team asa junior and senior. He too was on the Beadling ODP team that was five-time state champions, a regional champion in 2000 and a regional finalist in 2002.

Park was a two-time All-Section choice and a two-time team defensive MVP. In addition, his team was section runners-up as a junior. He was also on the Beadling ODP team that was five-time state champions, a regional champion in 2000 and a regional finalist in 2002.

Reinecker was a four-year varsity starter and All-County selection as a senior for a team that was the Bucks County champions in 1999 and a Bucks County finalist in 2002. He was a four-year EPYSA ODP participant and helped capture the 2002 ODP National Championship. He is the brother of recently graduated Duquesne defenseman Christian.
