Two Dukes Named to A-10 Academic Team

Nov. 25, 2003

Two Duquesne University men's soccer players were named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team. Senior Jason Kutney (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Borough) and junior Derek Mackenzie (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) were honored while Kutney was also named the Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year. It is the second straight year a Duquesne student-athlete received this honor, following Terry McNelis last season.

Kutney, who was a First Team Academic All-American this season and a Second Team Academic All-American last year, boasts a 3.95 grade point average as an investment management major. A team captain, he had a career-best six points this season on a goal and four assists, leading Duquesne to its first ever Atlantic 10 regular season championship.

Derek Mackenzie

Mackenzie accepts his first Academic All-Conference laurel. A 3.26 student in business, he was second on the team in assists with seven and fifth on the squad in scoring with nine points. In addition, Duquesne's career-leader in assists with 22 has also been named a 2003 Atlantic 10 Second Team All-Conference selection.

The Dukes, who finished the year ranked 25th nationally, captured their first ever Atlantic 10 regular season crown this year.
