Dukes Move Up In NSCAA Regional Poll

Sept. 16, 2002

Duquesne University's men's soccer team moved up to eighth place in this week's NSCAA/adidas Middle Atlantic regional rankings. The Dukes debuted at number nine in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's initial poll that was released on September 2, 2002.

** The Dukes, along with the host Red Raiders, were Champions of this past weekend's Colgate Invitational. DU came away with a 1-0-1 record in the event as they topped Rider 1-0 in double overtime on Friday evening and then tied Colgate 1-1 in the finale Saturday evening. Duquesne is now 3-0-2 for the 2002 season.

Junior Damien Pottinger (Scarborough, Ontario / Mother Teresa) scored his team-leading fourth goal to salvage a victory over Rider at the 103:24 mark of the match on Friday. Freshman Derek Freund (Glenshaw, PA / Shaler Area) scored the Dukes goal, his first as a collegian, off an assist from senior Steve Olivarez (Pittsburgh, PA / Mt. Lebanon) in the final minute of the first half to knot the score at 1-1 against Colgate Saturday. Senior Terry McNelis (Reading, PA / Exeter Twp.) had six saves in the two contests and secured his third shutout of the season, extending his Duquesne career record to 27.5 scoreless games.

Duquesne trails Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, Drexel, Penn State, Princeton and Bucknell in the Mid-Atlantic poll. The Dukes (3-0-2) return to action on Friday, Sept. 21 when they host Robert Morris (2-2-1) at 3:00 pm in their home opener at Rooney Field.

** Duquesne was originally named co-champions with host Colgate but were later declared champions based on the "goals allowed" tie-breaker. click here.
