Five Duquesne soccer players were named to the Atlantic 10 pre-season All-Conference teams as selected by the league's head coaches.
Senior goalkeeper Terry McNelis (Reading, PA/Exeter Twp.) and junior midfielder Damien Pottinger (Scarborough, Ontario/Mother Theresa) were named to the All-Conference men's soccer team. Freshmen Erica Carey (Wilmington, NC/J.T. Hoggard) and Caitlin McCarter (Oakville, Ontario/White Oaks) were named to women's All-Rookie Team while Zachary Varga (Mountville, PA/Hempfield) was named to the men's All-Rookie Team.
McNelis (left) enters the 2002 campaign as an All-American candidate. He is a three-time All-Conference choice as well as the 2000 A-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Last year he registered 4.5 shutouts, had a 1.04 goals against average and posted an .819 saves percentage. He currently ranks first in five of the six Duquesne goalkeeping records lists.
Pottinger, who was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team following his freshman campaign, tied for the team lead in scoring last season. He scored 13 points on six goals and one assist in just 13 contests. Pottinger scored game-winning goals versus La Salle and Temple last year.
Carey comes to Duquesne as a four-time All-Conference and All-AAAA regional honoree. She has been a member of the North Carolina Olympic Development Program since 1998 and is a three year-member of the North Carolina State championship Charlotte Ladies Blue club team
McCarter has been a member of the Canadian National program and its Junior National Training Pool. She is a member of the Ontario Provincial Team, which captured the 2000 National Gold Medal, and has led her Oakville Rep squad to numerous Provincial outdoor and indoor championships titles over her career.
Varga was a Second team All-League selection for his 1999 and 2001 league championship squads. A four-time letterman, his team won the District 3 championship in 1999.
Second year women's coach Dawn Crow's recruiting class was recently named the 11th best among 45 schools in the Mid-Atlantic region while fifth year men's coach Wade Jean returns all 11 starters from last year.
