Men's Soccer Topped By GW In Double OT

Nov. 2, 2001

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington broke a 1-1 stalemate in the second overtime to lift the Colonials to a 2-1 victory over the Dukes at GW's Mt. Vernon Athletic Complex Friday afternoon.

The Colonials struck first in the match when senior Matt Pilkington converted a free kick into the top right corner past junior keeper Terry McNelis (Reading, PA/Exeter Twp.) in the 32nd minute for the first score of the day.

Duquesne's leading scorer, sophomore Damian Pottinger (Scarborough, Ontario/Mother Theresa) tied the game at 1-1 at the 86th minute of the second half when he blasted a shot off a deflected ball in the box. Pottinger (above) now has six goals and 13 points. He missed the first three games of the season due to an injury.

Knotted at one goal apiece, the two teams were unable to score in the first overtime. The Colonials (8-7, 5-5 A10) broke through late in the second overtime. GW's Arnar Johannsson laced a shot past a diving McNelis in the 113th minute from the top of the box.

Duquesne outshot the Colonials 22-18. McNelis captured nine saves on 11 shots on goal while GW's Eric Lund stopped eight of the red and blue's nine targeted balls.

The Dukes (6-7-1, 4-6-0 A10) complete their regular season Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Richmond's First Market Stadium. The Spiders are 10-6-1, 7-3-0 in their first season in the Atlantic 10.
