Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University track and field teams posted eight event victories, while
Nadia Constantakis broke her own program record in the pole vault, at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational at Gesling Stadium.
Freshman
Melani Schmidt led the way with two wins, capturing both the 200- and 400-meter titles. Duquesne also swept the men's and women's 3,000 meters, 400-meter hurdles and triple jump.
Sylvia Kashak and
Jack Barnhisel won their respective 3,000-meter races, while
Lauren Stroka and
Spencer Edey claimed titles in the triple jump.
Colm McGroarty and
Anna Rorrer completed the sweep in the 400-meter hurdles.
EVENT WINNERS
Schmidt earned her first collegiate victories, winning the 200 meters in 25.00 and the 400 meters in 56.59, edging the field by less than a second in both races. The freshman from North Huntingdon, Pa., also ran the opening leg of the 4x100-meter relay that placed second in 47.76 alongside
Rose Kuchera,
Isabella Costa and
Selma Bajgoric.
Kashak and Barnhisel each delivered dominant performances in the 3,000 meters. Kashak won the women's race in 10:04.47, finishing nearly 40 seconds ahead of the field, while Barnhisel took the men's title in 8:53.23, more than 10 seconds clear of second place. Kashak now owns five wins across her first seven collegiate meets, while Barnhisel has captured a title in three consecutive CMU Invitationals, including back-to-back wins in the 3,000 meters.
Stroka secured the women's triple jump title with a mark of 11.62 meters (38-1.5) on her final attempt. Edey won the men's competition with a jump of 14.19 meters (46-6.75), which held from his opening attempt.
McGroarty recorded a personal-best time of 55.00 to win the men's 400-meter hurdles. Rorrer captured the women's 400-meter hurdles title in 1:01.69 and added a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (14.14).
RECORD-SETTING POLE VAULT
Nadia Constantakis headlined Friday competition by breaking her own program record in the pole vault, clearing 3.86 meters (12-8). She finished second at the meet and surpassed her previous record of 3.82 meters set at the ECAC Championships last season.
WOMEN'S TOP PERFORMANCES
- Duquesne owned the top four spots in the 3,000 meters, led by Kashak (10:04.47). Elizabeth Pizon (10:43.00), Sophia Trevenen (10:43.14) and Kendall Lucas (10:43.15) followed. Kashak, Pizon and Lucas all were running their first career 3k.
- Megan Penrod placed second in the javelin with a throw of 36.60 meters (120-1).
- Lauren Ciuca finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:13.01 in her outdoor debut.
- Madelyn Moretti recorded a runner-up finish in the shot put with a mark of 13.56 meters (44-6).
- Mia Pierce claimed second in the discus (48.07m / 157-8), while Kyndra Seddon (40.34m / 132-4) and Mary Grusky (37.24m / 122-2) finished seventh and ninth, respectively.
- Seava Cresta took third in the 100 meters in her first outdoor race, clocking 12.46.
- Selma Bajgoric finished third in the 400 meters with a time of 58.15.
- Brandi Brozeski crossed in fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.75).
- Isabella Costa and Caroline Garbe cleared 1.60 meters (5-3) to finish third and fourth in the high jump, while Grace Patterson was sixth at 1.55 meters (5-1).
- Macie Steiner made her outdoor debut with a seventh-place finish in the 400 meters (1:00.83) and placed ninth in the 200 meters (26.64).
- Charly Schlauch marked 5.03 meters (16-6) in ninth place of the long jump.
- Cydney Blahovec (2:20.73) and Kathryn Saum (2:20.88) were ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 800 meters, leading six Dukes in the field.
- Megan Palinski recorded a personal best in the hammer throw (35.66m / 117-0), while Emma Andreen set a personal best of 5:09.72 in the 1,500 meters.
MEN'S TOP PERFORMANCES
- Nick Keller ran to a second-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 48.02.
- Dino Nadarevic was the discus runner-up with a throw of 48.43 meters (158-11).
- Isaac Wetzel placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in 55.11, finishing just 0.11 seconds behind Colm McGroarty. Belal Abdelrahman ran the 400-meter hurdles for the first time in his career and placed 10th (59.25).
- Sam de la Riva finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.25.
- Isaak Nizami (9:23.28) and Kyle Kochanski (9:43.55) placed fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 3,000 meters, joining Barnhisel to give Duquesne three top-seven finishers.
- Nick Payne had a personal-best hammer throw of 46.02 meters (151-0) in fifth.
- Emery Moye (1.90m / 6-2.75) and Cody Mankowski (1.85m / 6-0.75) were seventh and ninth, respectively, in the high jump. Mankowski also placed sixth in the long jump (6.30m / 20-8).
- Christian Cupp, Jayden Jordan-Loran and Colm Matheney tied for ninth in the pole vault, each clearing 3.94 meters (12-11).
- Liam Kirkpatrick crossed in 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:39.02.
- Mikey Bill leaped a personal best in the long jump (5.71m / 18-9). Christian Cupp (42.31m / 138-10) and Colm Matheney (39.82m / 130-8) each posted personal-best marks in the discus.
