Ocala, Fla. - The Duquesne University swimming and diving team concluded competition at the National Invitational Championships on Saturday at the Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training Center.
The Dukes finished with 171 points, placing 23rd out of 52 competing schools. Kentucky captured the team title with 553 points, followed by Rice (500.5), Ohio State (496), Akron (463), and Queens (432) to round out the top five.
In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore
Ashley Freel advanced to the B Final and posted a time of 54.37 to finish 16th overall. Classmate
Sierra Snow also earned a spot in a B Final, placing 14th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.35.
Duquesne's 800-yard freestyle relay team delivered a strong performance, finishing 10th out of 35 teams. The quartet of Snow, sophomores
Rachel Howard and
Kaitlyn Connors, and Freel touched the wall in 7:21.84.
Snow continued her impressive weekend by qualifying for the A Final in the 200-yard backstroke, where she finished sixth with a time of 1:56.69.
The Dukes placed two swimmers in the B Final of the 200-yard breaststroke, led by sophomore
Jess Burns. Burns clocked a personal-best time of 2:14.39 to place 14th, a mark that also ranks as the third-fastest time in program history. Senior
Sydney Severini also reached the final, finishing 18th with a time of 2:16.20.
Duquesne's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Connors, Snow, freshman
Lucy Backus, and Freel recorded a time of 3:23.01 to finish 14th out of 34 entries.
On the diving boards, the Dukes had two competitors in action. Sophomore
Brianne Dempsey led the way on the one-meter board with a score of 223.65 to place 30th, while senior
Ashley Felitsky finished 35th with a score of 204.15. Felitsky also competed in the three-meter event, recording a score of 230.90 to finish 25th.
Several Dukes also competed in time trials during the meet. Burns posted the second-fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke time trial with a 1:04.80. Howard swam a 51.40 in the 100-yard freestyle, improving on her seed time of 51.89. Burns also bettered her seed time in the 100-yard freestyle, touching in 52.31 after entering with a 52.63. In the 50-yard backstroke time trial, Backus recorded a time of 26.52. Freshman
Norah Kotnik competed in the 200-yard freestyle time trial, finishing in 1:57.77 after improving on her seed time of 1:58.19.
