Ocala, Fla. - The Duquesne University swimming and diving team opened competition Thursday at the National Invitational Championships in Ocala, Florida, inside the Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training Center.
The Dukes totaled 75 points on the opening day. Ohio State leads the field with 193 points, followed by Kentucky with 175 and Fresno State with 165.
Duquesne began Thursday night's finals with the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of sophomores Kaitlyn Connors, Rachel Howard and
Jess Burns, along with freshman
Lucy Backus, posted a time of 1:33.25 to place 12th.
In the 50-yard backstroke, sophomore Ashley Freel qualified for the A-Final and finished ninth with a time of 25.20. Later in the 50-yard freestyle, Backus clocked a 23.35 in the B-Final to place 19th.
The Dukes closed out day one in the 400-yard medley relay, where the team of sophomore
Sierra Snow, Burns, Freel and Connors recorded a time of 3:43.35 to finish 11th.
