George Mason Game Notes

The Series vs. George Mason – It'll be the 18th meeting between the Dukes and Patriots come Saturday, and the ninth meeting in Pittsburgh. Duquesne holds a 12-5 record in the all-time series but George Mason has won three of the last four meetings, including an 86-63 victory in Virginia last season. Efficient shooting propelled the Patriots to an early 7-0 lead as they hit three of their first four attempts. The Dukes responded with freshman Mackenzie Blackford sinking a three-pointer, followed by senior Megan McConnell connecting from deep on the next possession to trim the deficit to one. However, George Mason answered with a 12-4 run over the next three minutes to extend their lead to 19-10. The teams exchanged baskets late in the quarter, but the Patriots maintained control, closing the period with a 28-15 advantage. Struggles on offense hurt the Dukes in the second quarter, as they managed just 3-of-14 shooting from the field. Meanwhile, George Mason continued their efficient play, shooting 58.3 percent (7-of-12) in the quarter to widen the gap. The Patriots' hot hand from beyond the arc proved crucial, as they connected on 10-of-19 three-pointers in the opening half while shooting an impressive 56.7 percent overall. Their first-half performance sent them into the break with a commanding 52-28 lead.

Scouting The Patriots – George Mason enter Saturday's matchup tied for first place in the Atlantic 10 standings and riding a four-game winning streak. The Patriots own a 20-8 overall record, including an impressive 15-2 mark in league play, and is coming off a dominant 85-59 victory over Saint Joseph's (Feb. 25). The Patriots are powered by standout guards Zahirah Walton and Kennedy Harris. Walton leads the team and ranks second in the conference in scoring at over 18 points per game while shooting 42.2 percent from the field, eighth-best in the league. She also contributes 5.8 rebounds, 1.8 steals, and 2.3 assists per contest. Walton has scored in double figures in 24 games this season, highlighted by one 30-point performance and a season-high 42-point outing against Murray State. Harris complements Walton as the team's second-leading scorer at 13.5 points per game. She ranks third in the conference with 62 total steals and averages 2.2 takeaways per contest. Shooting over 34.0 percent from the field, Harris also adds nearly three rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Like Walton, she has recorded 24 double-figure scoring games this season, including three 20-point performances.

Saint louis Remains - Duquesne delivered a defensive clinic Wednesday night, holding Saint Louis (11-19 | 5-12 A-10) to just 25.8 percent (17-of-66) from the field and 17.2 percent (5-of-29) from three-point range. The tone was set early, as the Dukes limited the Billikens to 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) shooting in the opening quarter and 8-of-28 (28.6 percent) in the first half. Midway through the third, Duquesne created separation with seven straight points to build a 52-44 lead. Green sparked the run with a layup, Blackford followed with two free throws, and redshirt sophomore Gabby Grantham-Medley buried a three to cap the surge. The Dukes carried a 63-50 advantage into the fourth. The defensive pressure never relented. Saint Louis shot just 4-of-20 (20.0 percent) in the final period as Duquesne used a 10-2 burst to claim its largest lead of the night, 79-60. Washington scored four points during the stretch, while Bordas, Blackford, and Green each added a bucket. In the second half alone, the Dukes held the Billikens to nine made field goals, just three from beyond the arc on 17 attempts.

One Final Bow – Before Saturday's contest against George Mason, Duquesne will celebrate Senior Day by honoring Raymi Coueta. She is earning her degree in accounting and hails from Cayenne, French Guiana. She has spent three seasons with the Dukes, appearing in 52 games with one start. Over her career, Coueta has scored more than 80 points, grabbed 56 rebounds, dished out 16 assists, and recorded 12 steals, all while shooting better than 38.0 percent from the field. Last season, she scored a career-high eight points in a victory at Loyola Chicago, knocking down a personal-best two three-pointers. Known for embracing the challenge of guarding the opponent's top scorer, Coueta has served as a key defensive presence at the top of Duquesne's press over the past couple of seasons.

All Systems Green – Ever since being reinserted into the starting lineup, junior guard Reina Green has made a major impact on both ends of the floor. She's coming off a career performance in a victory at Saint Louis (Feb. 25), pouring in 20 points on an efficient 7-of-12 (58.3 percent) shooting from the field, including a career-best 4-of-7 (57.1 percent), from three-point range. The Florida native added seven rebounds and an assist, scoring 10 points in each half to help pace Duquesne's offense. That outing marked her 10th game in double figures this season and the first time she has led the Dukes in scoring. Green has now scored in double figures in back-to-back games and in three of her last five contests. On the season, she ranks third on the team with 7.7 points per game and sits second with just under five rebounds per contest, while also averaging a steal per game. Over her last seven games, Green has elevated her play even further, averaging 10.0 points and a team-best 7.0 rebounds, while shooting better than 41 percent from the field.

Dependable & Dynamic - Continuing to be one of the most consistent scorers for the Dukes over the past month, sophomore guard Mackenzie Blackford has delivered outstanding efficiency night in and night out. She's coming off her seventh consecutive game in double figures, finishing with 15 points in a victory at Saint Louis. In that contest, she knocked down a pair of three-pointers, grabbed five rebounds, and went 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. The performance marked her 13th game in double figures this season and her 10th straight game with two or more triples. The Ohio native has been on a tear over her last seven games, averaging a team-best 17.7 points to go along with 2.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. During that stretch, she's shot better than 42.0 percent from the field, going 42-of-100, and matched that 42.0 percent clip from beyond the arc, connecting on 30-of-70 from three-point range. She's also been strong at the line, converting 11-of-13 free throws, nearly 85.0 percent. With her two three-pointers against the Billikens, Blackford tied her career high with 70 made triples, a mark that ranks 10th in program history.

The Washington Post - Freshman forward Raevin Washington continues to find her footing in her first season on the Bluff, emerging as a strong presence in the paint on both ends of the floor. Over her last four games, she is averaging 9.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and just under two blocks per contest. Washington is coming off an efficient performance in St. Louis, where she scored nine points on 4-of-5 (80.0 percent) shooting from the field while adding six rebounds, two steals, and three blocks. The freshman has quickly established herself as one of the premier shot blockers in the conference, ranking fourth with 42 total blocks and averaging 1.6 rejections per game. Her 42 blocks leave her just seven shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10. Washington has reached double figures five times this season and recorded 12 games with at least two blocks, including five contests with three or more. The Virginia native also secured her first career double-double just last week in a road win at Fordham, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Lefty Legend - The top-scoring freshman in the Atlantic 10, rookie sensation Alexis Bordas, has quickly established herself as one of the league's most dynamic offensive threats in her first season on the Bluff. She is coming off her 23rd double-figure scoring outing, posting 12 points, one rebound, and one assist in a victory at Saint Louis. Over the past seven games, Bordas has complemented Mackenzie Blackford brilliantly, averaging 17.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game, while shooting 40 percent (25-of-63) from three-point range and 37.4 percent (40-of-107) from the field. The freshman has also been virtually automatic from the free-throw line, converting 18-of-19 attempts (94.7 percent) during that span. Bordas has registered eight 20-point games this season, the most by any freshman in the A-10, including a recent 27-point explosion in a win over VCU. In that outing, she shot an efficient 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from the field, drained 7-of-9 three-pointers (77.8 percent), and went a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. On the season, the West Virginia native has connected on 86 triples, ranking fifth in program history and just six shy of Chassidy Omogrosso's school record of 92 set in 2018.
