Hampton, Va. – Behind two medals, two new school records and a collection of personal bests, the Duquesne swimming and diving team delivered a standout performance on day two of the Atlantic 10 Championships Thursday at the Hampton Virginia Aquaplex.
The Dukes totaled 189 points and sit in third place after two days of competition. Richmond leads the field with 242 points, followed by George Washington with 214. La Salle trails Duquesne with 174 points, while Fordham rounds out the top five with 168.
Sophomore
Sierra Snow and the 200-yard freestyle relay team headlined the day, each earning a spot on the podium. The evening began with the 500-yard freestyle, where Snow edged defending champion Ava Topolewski of George Washington by just one one-hundredth of a second to capture gold. She touched the wall in 4:45.77, a personal best and new school record.
The 200-yard freestyle relay closed out day two in fitting fashion, as the Dukes secured their second medal of the evening. The quartet of sophomores
Kaitlyn Connors,
Jess Burns and
Rachel Howard, along with freshman
Lucy Backus, captured bronze with a time of 1:31.46. The mark set a new school record, surpassing the previous standard established in 2022 by Mendy De Rooi, Sydney Sherman, Hanna J. Everhart and Leah Reisker.
In the 200 IM, senior
Sydney Severini posted a personal-best time of 2:01.83 in the finals to finish seventh overall. Freshman
Emily Kyre also notched a personal best in the morning prelims, touching the wall in 2:04.15.
The 50-yard freestyle followed, with Backus turning in a personal-best 23.01 to win the consolation final. Connors clocked a 23.22 to finish fourth in the heat and 12th overall. Duquesne also saw two more personal bests in the morning prelims, led by Howard (23.55) and Burns (23.84).
Joining Snow in posting a personal record in the 500-yard freestyle were senior
Aislinn Mooney and freshman
Norah Kotnik. Mooney touched the wall in 4:55.84 during prelims to earn a spot in the championship final, where she went on to finish seventh overall with a time of 4:57.02. Kotnik recorded a personal-best 5:07.71 in Thursday morning's prelims.
On the boards, sophomore
Brianne Dempsey added points for the Dukes in the three-meter dive, placing eighth with a score of 214.30. Freshman
Elly Huron advanced to the consolation final and posted a top score of 230.50, while senior
Ashley Felitsky recorded a final mark of 210.60.
