Opening Tip

- The Duquesne University men's basketball team, winners of three straight and four of its last five, travels to Olean, N.Y., Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. tip against St. Bonaventure at the Reilly Center.

- The Dukes extended their winning streak to three with an 88-86 victory over George Washington (Feb. 7) in a game that featured 11 ties and 18 lead changes. Senior guard Tarence Guinyard scored 23 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to lead the Dukes in the win over the Revolutionaries and also added five rebounds, an assist and two steals.

- Guinyard was one of four players to reach double figures in the win over GW, with junior guard Jimmie Williams contributing 20 points, senior forward David Dixon adding a season-high 17 points, five rebounds and a team-high four assists and junior forward Jakub Nečas finishing with 10 points and a pair of steals.

- During its three-game winning streak that has coincided with the month of February, Duquesne is averaging 78.3 points per game and has forced 46 turnovers, an average of 15.3 per contest. Jimmie Williams, the only member of the Dukes to start all 24 games this season, has averaged 18.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game during that stretch.

- Duquesne enters Saturday's game ranked third in the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage (.475), fourth in scoring offense (82.6 ppg) and fifth in three-point field goals made per game (9.33).

- The 2025-26 season marks the 110th year of Duquesne basketball. The Dukes started play in 1913-14 (DU did not field a team in 1944-45-46 due to World War II). Thanks to an 83-63 victory over Niagara (Nov. 3) in its 2025-26 season opener, Duquesne earned program victory No. 1,500.

- In today's day and age of college basketball with the NCAA Transfer Portal, Duquesne offers senior forward David Dixon, who will play his final season with the Dukes in 2025-26 and has spent his entire career on the Bluff. Dixon, 6'9" and 230 pounds, owns career totals of 747 points and 541 rebounds and is just the second player in program history to eclipse career totals of both 100 blocks and 100 dunks.

- Dixon is one of just four players in the Atlantic 10 this season that have spent their entire career with one program, joining 6'10" forward Sean Logan of Davidson, 6'10" forward Christian Fermin of VCU and 6'11" center Mike Walz of Richmond. Ironically, each of the four student-athletes to have played their entire career at one institution are post players.

- Redshirt senior guard Maximus Edwards scored 10 points in a 92-80 win over Sacred Heart (Nov. 7) to reach exactly 1,000 points for his career. Named the 2023 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, Edwards scored 722 in two seasons at George Washington before transferring to the Bluff and has scored 402 points in his time at Duquesne. He owns a career scoring average of 9.8 points in 115 games at the NCAA Division I level thanks to 1,124 points.

- The Dukes return home to host La Salle Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 7:00 p.m. after taking on the Bonnies.

At The Helm – Dru Joyce III was named the 18th head coach in the 110-year history of Duquesne basketball March 28, 2024, and in his second year at the helm in 2025-26. He owns an overall record of 27-29 (.482) in his first head coaching job. Joyce III, a native of Akron, Ohio, spent two seasons as associate head coach for the Dukes under Keith Dambrot from 2022 to 2024, helping guide Duquesne to an overall record of 45-25 (.643), including a 20-16 (.556) mark in the Atlantic 10, during that span. The Dukes made an appearance in the 2023 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) before earning the automatic bid for the A-10 in the 2024 NCAA Championship by winning four games in five days en route to the 2024 Atlantic 10 Championship crown in Brooklyn, N.Y., at the Barclays Center. Duquesne, as a No. 11 seed, made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1977 and earned its first victory in the championship since 1969 thanks to a 71-67 win over No. 6 seed BYU in Omaha, Neb., at CHI Health Center Arena.

Scouting the Bonnies – Saturday marks the 139th game between the two programs in a series that dates to Feb. 13, 1920 … St. Bonaventure is Duquesne's most frequent all-time opponent … The average score in the first 138 meetings? DU 71.522, SBU 70.978 (9,870 to 9,795 points, 75-point difference) … The 2025-26 season marks the 75th consecutive year the two have met and 21st straight year the two will square off in a home-and-home … DU owns more conference wins over SBU (36) than any other A-10 school … St. Bonaventure leads the series, 73-65, and has won the last three matchups after the Dukes won five consecutive in the series … In the first meeting between the two programs this season, St. Bonaventure shot 66.7 percent (16-of-24) from the field in the second half, including 7-for-11 (63.6%) from beyond the arc, in earning an 87-79 victory at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse (Jan. 28) .. The Bonnies used a 20-9 run to open up a 76-66 advantage with 3:33 to go … Darryl Simmons II scored 17 of his game-high 31 points in the final 20 minutes, while Tarence Guinyard and David Dixon each scored 12 for Duquesne.

George Washington Leftovers – The Dukes have won four consecutive games in the all-time series against the Revolutionaries ... Forward Alex Williams grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and scored seven points on the strength of a 5-for-6 showing at the free-throw line ... The Dukes outscored the Revs, 21-9, in points off turnovers as George Washington finished with 16 miscues … Duquesne shot 53.6 percent (15-of-28) in the second half and 48.3 percent (29-for-60) overall ... GW posted a 40-27 edge on the glass, including a 19-11 advantage in offensive rebounds ... Luke Hunger, who played a game-high 37:50, notched a double-double for the Revolutionaries with 17 points and 13 rebounds ... Duquesne led for 18:20 of the contest compared to 15:21 for George Washington.

Danger Zone – Senior guard Tarence Guinyard put forth a virtuoso performance in an 88-86 victory over George Washington (Feb. 7) that helped Duquesne extend its winning streak to three, scoring 23 of his game-high 27 points in the second half. Even more impressive was the personal run that Guinyard went on, as he scored 16 consecutive points over the course of five minutes and 44 seconds in the second half that helped the Dukes open up an 84-76 lead with 1:03 remaining. It's the second consecutive year a player for Duquesne had a personal run against the Revolutionaries, as last season in a 73-65 win in Washington, D.C., guard Maximus Edwards scored 13 consecutive points in the first half as part of a 16-4 run that turned a 14-10 deficit into a 26-18 advantage. Guinyard, meanwhile, enters Saturday's game at St. Bonaventure having reached double figures in six consecutive games as well as nine of his last 10 contests, each of which have come in Atlantic 10 play. Over his last six games, Guinyard is averaging 16.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.2 steals while shooting 47.8 percent (32-for-67) from the floor. Against Atlantic 10 foes, Guinyard has averaged 17.6 points per contest, which ranks fifth in the circuit.

Distributor – Despite an 87-79 setback to St. Bonaventure (Jan. 28) that opened a two-game homestand at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse, Duquesne is 8-2 (.800) this season when senior guard Tarence Guinyard finishes with six or more assists in a game. Against the Bonnies, Guinyard tied a Duquesne single-game record for dimes (12), becoming the fifth member of the Dukes in program history to finish with at least 12 assists in a game. When Guinyard finishes with five assists or less, Duquesne is 6-8 (.429). As a team, the Dukes rank second in the Atlantic 10 in assists per game (16.42). In conference play, Duquesne ranks fifth in the circuit with an average of 14.73 assists per contest. Guinyard, meanwhile, is the only player in the Atlantic 10 to rank in the top five this season in scoring, assists and assist-to-turnover ratio. He enters Saturday's game against the Bonnies leading the conference in assists per game (5.26), ranked second in scoring (16.6 ppg) and third in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.42).

The Comet – Arguably turning into the most consistent scorer for the Dukes this season is junior guard Jimmie Williams. Williams enters Saturday's game at St. Bonaventure having scored in double figures in 19 consecutive games, the longest streak by a Duquesne student-athlete in over 15 years. Former guard Aaron Jackson (2005-09) closed out his career on the Bluff by scoring 10 or more points in each of his final 22 games with the Dukes, which concluded with a 46-point effort in a 116-108 double overtime loss at Virginia Tech (March 18) in the first round of the 2009 National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Over the last 19 games, Williams has produced averages of 17.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.6 steals per contest while shooting 49.4 percent (117-for-237) from the floor and 84.6 percent (55-for-65) at the free-throw line. Each of the six efforts or 20 or more points for Williams this year have come during his current streak, including a career-high 28 points against No. 24 Saint Louis (Jan. 20). He also posted his first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in a 71-59 victory at Loyola Chicago (Jan. 24).

Front and Center – Despite having his streak for consecutive games with a block snapped at 11 in an 88-86 victory over George Washington (Feb. 7), senior forward David Dixon is playing some of the best basketball of his career as the Dukes hit the home stretch of the 2025-26 regular season. In the win over the Revolutionaries, Dixon scored a season-high 17 points while also grabbing five rebounds, four of which were offensive, dished out a career-high four assists and registered three steals. Dixon has scored in double figures in three of his last four games, averaging 10.5 points and 4.3 rebounds during that span while converting 54.8 percent (17-for-31) of his shots from the field, and has also posted multiple blocks in seven of Duquesne's 11 conference games, including a season-high four rejections against No. 24 Saint Louis (Jan. 20). Thanks to 25 blocks over the last 12 games (2.08 per contest), Dixon is making a push to move into fourth place all-time in the career record book for rejections. Former center Michael Hughes (2018-21) blocked 177 shots in three seasons on the Bluff, while Dixon sits fifth with 163 career blocks.

Did You Know? A member of the Dukes has scored at least 20 points in a game on 19 occasions this year after guards Tarence Guinyard (27) and Jimmie Williams (20) reached the plateau in an 88-86 win over George Washington (Feb. 7). Guinyard owns a team-high nine games of 20 or more points, with the Dukes 5-4 (.556) in those contests, while the Dukes are 4-2 (.667) in the six games Williams has hit the 20-point mark. In 32 games last season under first-year head coach Dru Joyce III, Duquesne had just 10 efforts of 20 or more points.

Paint Touches – A key to the success Duquesne has had this season in scoring has been due to its work in the low post. The Dukes are averaging 35.7 points in the paint this season, scoring at least 30 in 16 of their 24 games, at least 40 on seven occasions and at least 50 four times. To put that in perspective, Duquesne scored at least 40 points in the paint a total of four times in 32 games last season in the first year for Dru Joyce III as head coach. The Dukes matched a season-high in points in the paint (56) in a 99-49 win over Cleary (Dec. 27) and are 7-4 (.636) since the beginning of the 2024-25 campaign when scoring at least 40 points in the post, including a mark of 5-2 (.714) this year.
