Washington, D.C. – The Duquesne University men's basketball team earned its first road win of the 2024-25 season Wednesday, posting a 73-65 victory over George Washington at the Charles E. Smith Center. The Dukes, winners of six of their last seven, improved to 8-9 (.471) overall during the 2024-25 season, including 3-1 (.750) in the Atlantic 10.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
GW used a 13-2 run to close its deficit to 62-61 with exactly five minutes to play, forcing the Dukes to call timeout. Out of the break, both teams had empty possessions before senior guard
Tre Dinkins III knocked down a three-pointer with 4:32 to go to give Duquesne some breathing room. Trey Autry would try to answer the triple from Dinkins III on the next possession but was off the mark, and junior forward
David Dixon scored on a tip-in to push the lead for the Dukes to 67-61. Rafael Castro, who notched a double-double thanks to 27 points and 13 rebounds, pulled the Revolutionaries to within 67-64 after a driving layup with 2:41 remaining. A defensive slugfest the rest of the contest, GW looked to close to within 67-66 after a block by Dixon was called as goaltending, but after a review it was ruled a clean rejection.
PICK POCKET
Coming up big for the second consecutive game on defense was Dixon, as after the block was ruled clean, GW had possession. Out of a timeout, Dixon picked the pocket of Autry to give possession back to the Dukes. Autry immediately fouled Dinkins III, who hit a pair at the free-throw line to push Duquesne's lead to 69-64. It began a stretch in which the Dukes sealed the win at the charity stripe, finishing 6-for-9 in the final 46 seconds.
QUOTABLE
"A great road win," head coach
Dru Joyce III said. "I thought our guys played together. We played extremely hard, as it's tough to win on the road. We hit some adversity but we stayed together, and I love to see that because we're continuing to grow. Just some fantastic efforts. I'm glad Max was able to perform well back in D.C., because he carried us in the first half. But, there are no solo acts in this game. We had some big-time performances tonight, and that's what it takes to win on the road."
RETURN OF THE MAX
Redshirt junior guard
Maximus Edwards bolstered the Dukes off the bench in the first half, pouring in a season-high 16 points in just eight minutes of work. He knocked down each of his six shots from the field, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, while hitting his only attempt at the free-throw line. He sparked a 16-4 run in the first half that helped Duquesne turn a 14-10 deficit into a 26-18 advantage. Junior forward
Matúš Hronský knocked down the first three-pointer of the game for the Dukes, and Edwards followed with 13 consecutive points. A triple from Autry helped GW close to within 29-25 at the 5:17 mark of the opening 20 minutes, but Duquesne answered with a 13-4 surge to close the half and grab a 42-29 advantage at the break. Five different Dukes scored, including a triple from Edwards with 32 seconds to go before halftime.
