Pittsburgh, Pa. – St. Bonaventure shot 66.7 percent (16-of-24) from the field in the second half, including 7-for-11 (63.6%) from beyond the arc, in earning an 87-79 victory over the Duquesne University men's basketball team Wednesday at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. The Dukes, still in search of their first home Atlantic 10 win of the year, slipped to 11-10 (.524) overall and 3-5 (.375) in conference play.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
Duquesne owned a four-point edge at the break, 39-35, and also led, 57-56, with 11:02 remaining after a three-pointer from redshirt senior guard
Cam Crawford, but the Bonnies used a 20-9 run to open up a 76-66 advantage with 3:33 to go. Darryl Simmons II led the way with nine points during the burst and scored 17 of his game-high 31 points in the final 20 minutes as St. Bonaventure (13-8 | 2-6 Atlantic 10) shot 8-for-10 from the field, including 4-of-6 from deep, during the deciding run. The Bonnies also got 19 points from Dasonte Bowen, as he and Simmons II combined to convert 15 of their 22 attempts from the field in the contest, including 5-for-8 from beyond the arc, while going 15-for-16 at the free-throw line.
QUOTABLE
"We didn't guard," head coach
Dru Joyce III said. "We didn't put stops together. You have to be disciplined to get stops. You need all five guys working to get stops. We never set the tone. We have to have a will, and I can't impact will. I can motivate to play, or at least motivate in that direction. I can put together a strategy, too. But your will, that's internal. You have to want to defend. It's going to burn, too. Your legs are going to be tired, and it's going to take a toll on your body, but that's just what it takes to win. If you want to be all in on winning then you have to be all in on defense. It takes a lot of physical and mental toughness to do it."
HALL & OATES
Earning his second consecutive start and first at home, redshirt junior guard
Brandon Hall was one of five Dukes to finish in double figures, scoring 10 points while adding three rebounds and a pair of steals. It marked the first double-figure effort at the NCAA Division I level for Hall. Senior forward
David Dixon tied for team-high honors in scoring for Duquesne with 12 points, while off the bench forward
John Hugley IV contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Senior guard
Tarence Guinyard broke through and posted his first career double-double, matching Dixon for team-high honors with 12 points while also dishing out a career-high 12 assists. Guinyard tied the Duquesne single-game record for dimes, becoming the fifth player in program history to hand out 12 assists in a game. The last to turn the trick came almost 20 years ago, with former guard Bryant McAllister finishing with 12 against Fordham Feb. 4, 2006, at the A.J. Palumbo Center. Guinyard, amazingly, is the fifth different player for the Dukes this season to record a double-double and second in as many games, joining Hugley IV, Dixon, junior forward
Jakub Nečas and junior guard
Jimmie Williams, who scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Duquesne's last game, a 71-59 win at Loyola Chicago (Jan. 24).
QUOTABLE
"You want good performances, but you have to play both sides," Joyce III said. "We have to have some spirit and some tone setters about it. It's an area we have to step up. As coaches we can't go out there and guard for them. I wish I could. I can tell you this much, I would've come away with five fouls. I can't stay in front of these guys anymore but they would've felt my presence. That's just the attitude we have to take on. We're here to get some stops. Stops wins games. Offense usually just tells you how much you won by."
