Loyola Chicago Game Notes
The Series vs. Loyola Chicago – Wednesday morning will be just the fifth meeting between the Dukes and Ramblers as Loyola Chicago joined the Atlantic 10 Conference in July of 2022. Duquesne has won the previous four meetings, including a 75-70 victory in Chicago last season. Coming out of the break, Duquesne delivered one of its best defensive quarters of the season, holding Loyola Chicago to just four points in the third. The Ramblers managed only 2-of-14 shooting (14.3%) from the field, while the Dukes forced seven turnovers and recorded a pair of steals. Duquesne opened the half with an 11-2 run, fueled by three three-pointers, and closed the quarter with eight straight points, all from
Raymi Coueta, to take a commanding 53-29 lead into the final stanza. However, Loyola Chicago flipped the script in the fourth, catching fire with a blistering 72.7 percent shooting performance (16-of-22), including four three-pointers. With 7:22 remaining, the Ramblers used a 16-5 run to cut the deficit to 62-50, bringing the margin to just 12 points with under four minutes to play.
Megan McConnell halted the momentum with a driving layup, but Loyola continued to push, trimming the deficit to single digits (69-60) following a 10-5 spurt. In the final 46 seconds, Duquesne remained composed at the free-throw line, converting 6-of-8 attempts, including three makes from
Mackenzie Blackford to seal the victory.
Scouting The Ramblers – Loyola Chicago enters Pittsburgh riding a six-game winning streak, boasting a 12-11 overall record and an 8-4 mark in A-10 play. The Ramblers are coming off a 66-55 win over VCU on Saturday (Feb. 7). Loyola features three players averaging double figures, led by Alex-Anne Bessette at 11.7 points per game to go along with 3.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals. Bessette is shooting better than 44.0 percent from the field and has recorded double figures in 13 games this season. Alexus Mobley ranks second on the team with 10.3 points per contest while adding 3.5 rebounds and nearly two steals per game, with Alexa Kinas close behind at 10.0 points per game. Kinas is pulling down just under five rebounds per game and leads the team with 2.6 steals per contest; her steal average and 59 total takeaways both rank second in the A-10. Brooklyn Vaughn anchors the glass for Loyola, leading the team with more than six rebounds per game, while Rosalie Mercille has knocked down a team-best 15 three-pointers.
St. Bonaventure Remains - The contest featured 16 lead changes and six ties, with the majority coming in the second half. The final 20 minutes alone saw eight lead changes and four ties. Duquesne carried a 47-44 advantage into the fourth quarter, but St. Bonaventure quickly grabbed a one-point lead after opening the period with four straight points. Blackford and Bordas answered by fueling a 7-0 Duquesne run, pushing the Dukes ahead 54-48 with just over five minutes remaining. Later in the quarter, Bordas extended the cushion to 61-56 by knocking down a pair from the charity stripe with 1:36 left. The Bonnies responded with five unanswered points to force overtime, as Parker connected on a jumper before Buckley converted a three-point play to tie the game at 61-61 with 27 seconds remaining. Duquesne had one final look at the buzzer but couldn't convert as regulation expired.
Reaching New Heights – One of the Dukes' most consistent offensive threats in recent weeks has been sophomore guard
Mackenzie Blackford. Over her last six games, Blackford is averaging 13.2 points and 1.3 steals per game while shooting a blistering 52.5 percent (21-of-40) from beyond the arc and an impressive 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the field. She is coming off a career-high 27-point performance at St. Bonaventure, finishing 9-of-21 (42.9%) from the floor, including a career-best 7-of-14 (50.0%) from three-point range. Blackford scored 22 of her 27 points in the second half and overtime, shooting an efficient 53.3 percent (8-of-15) overall and 75.0 percent (6-of-8) from deep during that stretch. The Ohio native has reached double figures in eight games this season and has led the Dukes in scoring on five occasions. On the year, she is averaging just under 10 points per game, collecting 2.7 rebounds and 1.4 steals, while shooting 35.3 percent from the field and 35.0 percent from three. Blackford has recorded six games with three or more made triples this season, including two with five or more.
Rookie On The Rise - Freshman guard
Alexis Bordas has firmly established herself as the Dukes' most consistent scoring threat this season. She has reached double figures 19 times, including in 12 of her last 14 outings, during which she has averaged 16.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.6 steals, and 1.4 assists per game. Bordas is shooting 35.3 percent (73-of-207) from the field, 34.6 percent (46-of-133) from three-point range, and an impressive 86.7 percent (39-of-45) from the charity stripe. The freshman guard is coming off her second straight 20-point performance and seventh of the season, after erupting for 25 points at St. Bonaventure. She went 7-of-19 (36.8 percent) from the floor, knocking down five three-pointers, including all five during a 14-point first half. Bordas also posted a season-best seven rebounds and added two steals while recording her 19th double-figure scoring effort of the year. The West Virginia native ranks sixth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 15.6 points per game and sits fourth nationally with 3.1 three-pointers per contest. She has connected on three or more triples in 13 games this season, including six outings with five or more, and has led the Dukes in scoring on 11 occasions.
Round Mound Of Rebound - Duquesne continues to limit opponents to one shot per possession, fueled by its dominance on the glass. The Dukes rank 23rd nationally at more than 42 rebounds per game and sit 30th in Division I with over 15 offensive rebounds per contest. That rebounding advantage has resulted in 12 games with 40 or more rebounds this season, including four outings with 50-plus boards. Most recently in Olean, N.Y., the Dukes saw a pair of players reach double figures on the glass. Sophomore
Harriet Ford led the way with 14 rebounds, marking her ninth game this season with double-digit boards and the 13th time she has paced Duquesne in that category. Classmate
Maja Rohkohl also pulled down 10 rebounds against the Bonnies, recording her second double-figure rebounding performance of the season and the fifth of her career. Ford currently leads the Atlantic 10 with just under four offensive rebounds per game and ranks second in the league at 8.2 rebounds overall. Over the last five games, Rohkohl has averaged 6.6 rebounds, including two performances with 10 or more.
Let It Fly - The Dukes enter Wednesday's contest having made at least one three-pointer in 450 consecutive games, a streak spanning 15 years. The last time Duquesne failed to connect from beyond the arc was on December 21, 2011, when the Dukes went 0-for-19 from long range against Florida in the championship game of the Gator Holiday Classic. Just last season, the NCAA Division I women's record for consecutive games with a made three-pointer was broken. Iowa State had previously held the mark with an astounding 945-game streak dating back to February 19, 1995, when the Cyclones competed in the Big Eight Conference. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga now owns the longest active streak in Division I women's basketball, with 827 straight games featuring a made three-pointer.
