Saint Joseph's Game Notes

The Series vs. Saint Joseph's – A series that dates back to 1984, it'll be the 64th meeting between the Dukes and Hawks as Saint Joseph's holds a 49-14 advantage in the all-time series. The Hawks had won six straight until Duquesne broke the streak with a 67-64 victory in Philadelphia.  Entering the fourth quarter with a 51-44 lead, Duquesne quickly extended their advantage to 10 with a driving layup and a deep three from senior Megan McConnell. However, a two-minute scoring drought allowed Saint Joseph's to rally with a 10-1 run, narrowing the gap to 57-56 with 3:26 left in regulation. Following a Dukes timeout, freshman Mackenzie Blackford drained a clutch three-pointer from the right wing, pushing the lead back to four. The Hawks answered with a driving layup, but freshman Nadia Moore responded by sinking a pair at the chalk, extending the lead to 62-58 with 1:48 remaining. Saint Joseph's Mackenzie Smith went one-for-two at the line, but graduate student Gabby Hutcherson delivered a crucial three-pointer from the top of the key to restore the Dukes' six-point cushion. The Hawks trimmed the deficit to four with 51 seconds left, but Blackford sealed the game by sinking two free-throws with just three seconds remaining.

Scouting The Hawks – Saint Joseph's enters Pittsburgh with a 12-6 overall record and a 3-4 mark in Atlantic 10 play. The Hawks are looking to bounce back after dropping back-to-back contests, most recently a 66-59 loss to George Mason (Jan. 18). Saint Joseph's features three players averaging double figures, led by Gabby Casey. Casey ranks fifth in the Atlantic 10 with 15.3 points per game while adding 7.1 rebounds and ranking fourth in the league with 2.3 three-pointers per contest. She has scored in double figures 15 times this season and has recorded two double-doubles. Aleah Snead is second on the team at 11.0 points per game, while also contributing 5.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per contest. She is shooting an efficient 44.8 percent from the field and has posted 11 double-figure outings. Rhian Stokes rounds out the trio, averaging 10.6 points per game to go along with 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals per outing. Stokes is shooting over 44.4 percent from beyond the arc and has reached double figures in 10 games this season.

Dayton Remains – The Flyers swept the season series with their victory on Wednesday night and have taken the last three meetings. Dayton opened the contest on a 15-0 run, hitting six of their first eight shots … A pair of Dukes finished in double figures Wednesday night, led by Alexis Bordas and Reina Green. Bordas posted a game-high 16 points to go along with a team-high six rebounds and two steals. She knocked down one triple and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. The freshman scored 13 of her 16 points in the second half, shooting 3-of-7 from the field while converting all seven of her free-throw attempts. The outing marked her 16th double-figure scoring performance of the season and the ninth time she has led the Dukes in scoring. Green added a career-high 14 points, connecting on a pair of triples. She also grabbed three rebounds and dished out two assists. The junior scored 11 of her 14 points in the third quarter alone, finishing 3-of-4 from the field, a perfect 3-of-3 from the line, and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. It marked the sixth double-figure game of the season and the fifth time she has led the team in assists.

Rise of the Rookie - Freshman guard Alexis Bordas has made an immediate impact in her first season on the Bluff, emerging as the Dukes' most consistent scoring threat. She currently ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10 at 15.3 points per game and sits 10th nationally with 3.1 three-pointers per contest. Bordas has knocked down 58 triples this season, third most in the A-10 and 11th in all of Division I. The West Virginia native is coming off her 16th double-figure performance of the year against Dayton, finishing with 16 points, six rebounds, and two steals while going a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. She has recorded five 20-point outings this season and has scored in double figures in nine of her last 10 games. Bordas has led the Dukes in scoring nine times overall, including six of the last nine contests. In conference play, the freshman is averaging 14.0 points per game to go along with a team-leading 1.6 steals and 2.5 rebounds per contest. She is shooting over 36.0 percent from the field, has connected on 21 three-pointers, and has been especially efficient at the line, converting 83.3 percent (20-of-24) of her free-throw attempts.

The Green Light - Junior guard Reina Green has emerged as a key contributor for the Dukes in recent weeks. Over the past five games, Green is averaging 8.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game while shooting an impressive 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the free-throw line. The Florida native is coming off a career-high performance in which she scored 14 points and knocked down a pair of three-pointers. Green poured in 11 of her 14 points in the third quarter alone, finishing 3-of-4 from the field, a perfect 3-of-3 from the charity stripe, and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. The outing marked her sixth double-figure scoring game of the season and the fifth time she has led the Dukes in assists. In Duquesne's Atlantic 10 opener at Davidson (Dec. 3), Green tallied 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting while adding five rebounds. Against another conference opponent, she again reached double figures with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting, to go along with six rebounds, two steals, and three assists against Saint Louis. For the season, Green is averaging just under seven points per game while contributing 4.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per contest. Her 24 steals rank third on the team, and she is shooting a solid 37.0 percent from the field.

Blurring the Picture - Despite navigating a challenging stretch, the Dukes continue to shine on the defensive end of the floor. Duquesne currently ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in field-goal percentage defense, holding opponents to just 37.2 percent shooting (419-of-1,126) from the field. The Dukes have limited 13 opponents to under 40.0 percent shooting this season, including two games in which foes were held below 30.0 percent. Duquesne has earned six victories in those contests and owns a 4-2 record when opponents shoot better than 41.0 percent from the floor. Duquesne also continues to create havoc defensively, forcing just under 18 turnovers per game, sixth best in the conference, while averaging more than nine steals per contest. Freshman guard Alexis Bordas leads the team and ranks 10th in the Atlantic 10 with just under 2.0 steals per game, while sophomore Mackenzie Blackford is second on the team with 27 takeaways. Bordas has recorded at least one steal in all but two games this season and has led the Dukes in steals nine times, while Blackford has paced the team in takeaways on four occasions.

Did You Know? - The Dukes enter Saturday's contest having made at least one three-pointer in 446 consecutive games, a streak spanning 15 years. The last time Duquesne failed to connect from beyond the arc was on December 21, 2011, when the Dukes went 0-for-19 from long range against Florida in the championship game of the Gator Holiday Classic. Just last season, the NCAA Division I women's record for consecutive games with a made three-pointer was broken. Iowa State had previously held the mark with an astounding 945-game streak dating back to February 19, 1995, when the Cyclones competed in the Big Eight Conference. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga now owns the longest active streak in Division I women's basketball, with 817 straight games featuring a made three-pointer.
