Rhode Island Game Notes

The Series vs. Rhode Island – Come Sunday afternoon, it'll be the 64th meeting between the Dukes and Rams in a series that dates back to 1983. Duquesne holds a 39-24 advantage in the all-time series but Rhode Island took the last meeting, 59-57 a season ago in Kingston, R.I. Entering the fourth quarter tied at 44, senior Megan McConnell put Duquesne ahead 49-47 with a pair of free throws and a layup at the 7:58 mark. Rhode Island responded with a three-pointer from Sophie Phillips and a layup from Hawa Komara, reclaiming a 52-49 lead. Junior Jerni Kiaku answered with a basket, and McConnell added three more points to push the Dukes back in front, 54-52. The Rams quickly tied the game and later built a 58-54 advantage with 1:29 remaining. Freshman Nadia Moore drilled a clutch three-pointer to cut the deficit to one (58-57), but both teams then endured three consecutive empty possessions. Harsimran Kaur made one of two free throws with 15 seconds left. After a Duquesne timeout, the Dukes unfortunately turned the ball over on their final possession, and following an official review, the game ended with no time remaining.

Scouting The Rams – Rhode Island has received votes in the latest AP Poll and enters Sunday with a 15-2 overall record and a perfect 6-0 mark in Atlantic 10 play. The Rams most recently grinded out a 46-41 road victory at VCU on Wednesday (Jan. 14), extending their winning streak to nine games. Rhode Island features three players averaging double figures, led by Brooklyn Gray, who is posting 13.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. Gray is shooting better than 41.0 percent from the field this season while converting over 89.0 percent of her free throws. Palmire Mbu ranks second on the team with 12.0 points per game and leads the Rams with 6.4 rebounds per contest, while her 1.6 blocks per game rank fourth in the Atlantic 10. Vanessa Harris rounds out the trio, averaging just under 11 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 40.0 percent from the field. As a team, the Rams pace the Atlantic 10 and rank 14th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 53.6 points per game. Their +14.8-scoring margin also leads the conference.

George Washington Remains - After going 0-for-9 from beyond the arc in the first half, George Washington (10-9 | 2-4 A-10) opened the final 20 minutes with a 12-3 run, knocking down four of its first five shots and a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range. The Revolutionaries built a 30-17 advantage before Reina Green and Harriet Ford each scored to trim the deficit to eight with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter. George Washington answered with six consecutive points, but Bordas completed a three-point play and Gabby Grantham-Medley added a layup as Duquesne trailed 38-27 at the end of the third. In the fourth quarter, Bordas drilled her second straight three, though the Revolutionaries responded with a decisive 9-2 run over a two-minute stretch to claim their largest lead of the game at 55-37. Duquesne mounted one final push with an 8-2 run to close within 57-45 with 1:37 remaining, but that was as close as the Dukes would come.

Rookie is Rolling – Freshman guard Alexis Bordas continues to make an immediate impact in her first season on the Bluff, emerging as the Dukes' most consistent scorer. She currently ranks fifth in the Atlantic 10 at 16.0 points per game and is coming off her second consecutive 20-point performance. Bordas scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half against the Revolutionaries, shooting 5-of-11 (.455) from the field and 3-of-6 (.500) from three-point range. The West Virginia native has recorded five 20-point outings this season and has scored in double figures 15 times, including eight straight games. She has led the Dukes in scoring eight times overall and in five of the last seven contests. Over her last eight games, Bordas is averaging 18.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game while shooting over 40.0 percent from the field (47-of-116) and from beyond the arc (31-of-78). A three-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, Bordas also ranks eighth in the conference with 2.0 steals per game and has recorded two or more takeaways in 11 games this season.

Block Party on Washington Street – As Duquesne continues to lead the conference in field goal percentage defense, allowing just 37.0 percent per game, one of the team's biggest strengths this season has been its ability to protect the rim. Freshman forward Raevin Washington has led the way, pacing the Dukes and ranking third in the Atlantic 10 with 28 blocked shots. Her 1.65 blocks per game also rank third in the conference and 57th nationally. The Virginia native has recorded at least one block in 13 games this season, including six performances with two or more rejections. Washington leads the team with four games of three or more blocks and set a season high with five in a win over Kent State (Nov. 24). Offensively, the freshman is averaging just under five points per game and ranks third on the team with 4.4 rebounds per contest. She is shooting 44.7 percent (34-of-75) from the field and has reached double figures twice this season.

Tickle The Twine – Featuring a pair of elite sharpshooters from behind the arc, Duquesne continues to let it fly from downtown. Freshman guard Alexis Bordas ranks among the nation's top three-point threats, sitting third nationally at 3.3 made triples per game. She has knocked down 56 three-pointers this season, ranking third in the Atlantic 10, while her 37.6 shooting percentage from deep sits fifth in the league. Bordas has drained three or more triples in 11 games this season and posted the second-highest single-game total in program history with 10 three-pointers in a City Game victory over Pitt (Dec. 21). Sophomore guard Mackenzie Blackford provides a strong complement, ranking second on the team with 31 made threes while averaging just under two per game, good for ninth in the conference. The Ohio native has hit three or more triples on three occasions this season and poured in a season-high six from long range in a win over Kent State (Nov. 24). Together, Bordas and Blackford have accounted for 87 of Duquesne's 111 made three-pointers this season.

Glass Cleaners - Duquesne continues to limit opponents to one shot per possession, fueled by its dominance on the glass. The Dukes rank ninth nationally with more than 44 rebounds per game and sit 11th in Division I with over 16 offensive rebounds per contest. That rebounding edge has led to 11 games with 40 or more rebounds this season, including four outings with 50-plus boards. Sophomore forward Harriet Ford has been the catalyst behind that success, averaging a team-best 8.6 rebounds per game to lead the Atlantic 10. Her 4.2 offensive rebounds per contest rank 10th nationally. Ford has recorded seven double-digit rebounding performances this season and enters the weekend collecting 10 or more in three of the last four games. Redshirt sophomore guard Gabby Grantham-Medley and freshman forward Raevin Washington also provide a strong presence on the glass. Grantham-Medley ranks second on the team with just under five rebounds per game, while Washington is averaging 4.4 boards per outing.

Did You Know? - The Dukes enter Sunday's contest having made at least one three-pointer in 444 consecutive games, a streak spanning 15 years. The last time Duquesne failed to connect from beyond the arc was on December 21, 2011, when the Dukes went 0-for-19 from long range against Florida in the championship game of the Gator Holiday Classic. Just last season, the NCAA Division I women's record for consecutive games with a made three-pointer was broken. Iowa State had previously held the mark with an astounding 945-game streak dating back to February 19, 1995, when the Cyclones competed in the Big Eight Conference. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga now owns the longest active streak in Division I women's basketball, with 824 straight games featuring a made three-pointer.
