Opening Tip

- The Duquesne University men's basketball team hosts Loyola Chicago Saturday at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse for a 6:00 p.m. in a nationally-televised game on CBS Sports Network.

- The Dukes, who started the 2024-25 season 0-6 before winning nine of 12 to even their overall record at 9-9, are looking to snap a five-game losing streak.

- Of Duquesne's 14 losses, 10 have been by seven points or less, including seven by five or fewer points.

- The Dukes are coming off a 73-68 loss at Richmond (Feb. 5), as the Spiders shot 61 percent (25-for-41) from the field, a season high by a Duquesne opponent, including 66.7 percent (8-for-12) from beyond the arc.

- Redshirt junior guard Maximus Edwards led the Dukes off the bench at Richmond with 21 points, converting eight of his 10 shots from the floor, including a 4-for-6 showing from beyond the arc, while also registering two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

- Senior guard Tre Dinkins III contributed 17 points against the Spiders on the strength of a 5-for-11 performance from downtown, while junior guard Kareem Rozier finished with 10 points and a career-high five steals off the bench.

- Duquesne, which has used seven different starting lineups during the 2024-25 campaign, leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks 44th in NCAA Division I in bench points with an average of 27.8 points per contest.

- The 2024-25 season marks the 109th year of Duquesne basketball. The Dukes started play in 1913-14 (DU did not field a team in 1944-45-46 due to World War II). Duquesne, which has posted back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 1971 & 1972, is looking to record three consecutive 20-win campaigns for the first time since finishing with four straight 20-win seasons from 1952 to 1955. The Dukes are also five wins shy of 1,500 as an NCAA program.

- The leading active scorer for the Dukes is senior forward Jahsean Corbett, who owns career totals of 1,521 points and 860 rebounds. Corbett, who eclipsed 1,500 career points with a layup in the first half at Saint Joseph's (Jan. 29), amassed totals of 1,303 points and 725 rebounds in three seasons at Chicago State prior to transferring to Duquesne.

- The Dukes have a week off after hosting the Ramblers and return to action Saturday, Feb. 15, with a 2:30 p.m. tip against Dayton at UD Arena.

At The Helm – Dru Joyce III was named the 18th head coach in the 109-year history of Duquesne basketball March 28, 2024. Joyce III, a native of Akron, Ohio, spent two seasons as associate head coach for the Dukes under Keith Dambrot from 2022 to 2024, helping guide Duquesne to an overall record of 45-25 (.643), including a 20-16 (.556) mark in the Atlantic 10, during that span. The Dukes made an appearance in the 2023 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) before earning the automatic bid for the A-10 in the 2024 NCAA Championship by winning four games in five days en route to the 2024 Atlantic 10 Championship crown in Brooklyn, N.Y., at the Barclays Center. Duquesne, as a No. 11 seed, made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1977 and earned its first victory in the championship since 1969 thanks to a 71-67 win over No. 6 seed BYU in Omaha, Neb., at CHI Health Center Arena.

Scouting the Ramblers – Saturday marks the 20th game between Duquesne and Loyola Chicago, with the Dukes owning a 12-7 (.632) advantage in the all-time series … The series dates back to a 29-13 Loyola win in Chicago, Ill., Dec. 11, 1929 … The two met 15 times between 1929 and 1962 and did not play again until two meetings in 1993 as conferences foes in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) in 1993 (DU's only non-A-10 season) … In last year's meeting at Gentile Arena, the Ramblers used an 11-3 burst to snap a 57-57 tie and open up a 68-60 lead with 3:16 remaining en route to a 72-67 triumph … Jayden Dawson snapped the tie with a jumper and, after a couple of empty possessions from both teams, sophomore forward David Dixon pushed the Dukes on top, 60-59, with a three-pointer … Loyola Chicago responded by scoring the next eight points of the game to take control … Dixon led the Dukes with a career-high 19 points.

Richmond Leftovers – The Spiders lead the Dukes, 26-2, in Atlantic 10 games during the regular season ... Richmond established season highs by an opponent for field goal percentage (.610) and three-point field goal percentage (.667) and was also 15-for-18 (83.3%) at the free-throw line ... The Spiders held a 28-26 advantage in rebounds despite being outrebounded, 17-5, on the offensive glass ... Duquesne led Richmond in points off turnovers (15-9), second chance points (16-7), fast break points (14-5) and bench points (43-24) ... Both teams finished with 28 points in the paint ... Senior forward Jahsean Corbett posted a game-high nine rebounds, six of which came on the offensive glass ... Over his last three games, Corbett owns 26 caroms, 15 of which (58%) are of the offensive variety ... Corbett and sophomore forward Jakub Necas each finished with a block ... The Dukes reached double figures in steals for the fourth time during the 2024-25 season against the Spiders, finishing with 10 thefts ... Duquesne is 2-2 (.500) this year when registering at least 10 steals in a game ... Jason Roche led Richmond with 14 points, finishing 4-for-4 from the field, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, and 3-for-4 at the free-throw line while also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.

Maximum Effort – Redshirt junior guard Maximus Edwards has been a key component for the Dukes off the bench this season, and he came through at Richmond (Feb. 5), pacing Duquesne with 21 points. It marked his second game of the 2024-25 season eclipsing the 20-point plateau, as he scored a season-high 22 points in a 73-65 victory at George Washington (Jan. 15). Against the Spiders, Edwards shot 8-for-10 from the field, including 4-for-6 from deep, and was true on his only attempt at the free-throw line. That point from the charity stripe was part of a four-point play in the second half, the first for Duquesne this season. Edwards enters Saturday's game against Loyola Chicago ranked fourth in the Atlantic 10 against conference opposition this year in field goal percentage (.589), having converted 33 of his 56 opportunities from the floor. Edwards has also been successful on 48.3 percent (14-of-29) of his chances from downtown vs. the Atlantic 10, which paces the circuit.

Deal Me In – Despite finishing with multiple turnovers for just the fifth time this season with two at Richmond (Feb. 5), junior guard Kareem Rozier has been solid protecting the rock this season. Rozier, who owns 239 career dimes to his credit, has handed out 38 assists against just eight miscues in 10 games of Atlantic 10 action, an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.75. Not only does Rozier lead the Atlantic 10 in assist-to-turnover ratio overall this year (3.82), the total ranks fourth in NCAA Division I. During his career on the Bluff, Rozier, who is Duquesne's active leader for consecutive games played (81), has compiled a career assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.85. A closer look at the NCAA Division I leaders in assist-to-turnover ratio ...

Army Reserve – While junior guard Kareem Rozier has been solid distributing the ball this season, he also adds production in other areas for Duquesne. Rozier finished with 10 points at Richmond (Feb. 5) while also while setting a career high with five steals, becoming the first member of the Dukes this season to register at least five thefts in a game. Coupled with the 21-point performance from redshirt junior guard Maximus Edwards against the Spiders, and it marks the third time this season Duquesne has had multiple players score in double figures off the bench. The Dukes also had two double-figure scoring efforts off the bench in a 67-54 win over Old Dominion (Nov. 26) as part of the Cayman Islands Classic and in a 93-45 triumph over Cleary (Dec. 27). So far this season, Duquesne has received 18 double-figure scoring efforts off the bench, including four from sophomore guard Jake DiMichele, who has missed the last two months due to injury, and three from Edwards. The Dukes are 4-4 (.500) this season when receiving at least 30 points from their reserves after owning a 43-24 edge in bench points at Richmond.

Tre Day – Senior guard Tre Dinkins III reached double figures in scoring for the eighth consecutive game, the longest streak by a student-athlete for the Dukes this season, by contributing 17 points at Richmond (Feb. 5). Over the last eight contests, Dinkins III is averaging 16.0 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while shooting 43.7 percent (45-for-103) from the field, including 38.7 percent (24-for-62) from beyond the arc, and 87.5 percent (14-for-16) at the free-throw line. He's also done a solid job distributing over that same time frame, handing out 24 assists (3.00 per game) while also registering 10 steals. Dinkins enters Saturday's tilt with Loyola Chicago ranked eighth in the Atlantic 10 in three-point field goals per game (2.43) while also sitting 14th in three-point field goal percentage (.389). Against conference foes, Dinkins III is tied for fifth in the Atlantic 10 in three-point field goals made per game (2.60) with Gibson Jimerson of Saint Louis and Phillip Russell of VCU.

Defense Wins Championships – Despite a five-game losing streak entering Saturday's game against Loyola Chicago, Duquesne hangs its hat on the defensive end. The Dukes have given up 80 or more points just three times this year and currently rank fourth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring defense (66.7 ppg). Duquesne, which held nine consecutive opponents under 70 points earlier this season, the longest streak by the program in over 60 years, is also ranked sixth in the A-10 in scoring defense against conference opposition at 69.3 points per contest. The Dukes own a record of 8-5 (.615) this season when holding opponents to under 70 points, including a perfect 5-0 when yielding under 60 points in a contest.
