- The Dukes kicked off their 53rd season of basketball on Monday afternoon, cruising to an 89-60 victory over Saint Francis. With the win, Duquesne has now won three of its last four season openers, including back-to-back season victories.

- Five Dukes finished in double figures on Monday afternoon, highlighted by a pair of career performances. Sophomore Nadia Moore posted a career-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting (58.3%), adding three rebounds and two steals. She did most of her damage in the third quarter, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and leading all scorers with 10 points in the frame.

- Junior Dunja Zecevic also recorded a personal best in her Duquesne debut, scoring 16 points on 63.6 percent shooting (7-of-11) to go along with five rebounds, a block, and a steal. Slippery Rock Game Notes

The Series vs. Slippery Rock – It will be the first matchup between Duquesne and Slippery Rock since December 2015 and just the 12th meeting all-time between the programs. The Rock holds a 7–4 edge in the series, but the Dukes have claimed victory in each of the last three contests, including a 79–54 win in their most recent meeting. In that 2015 matchup, Amadea Szamosi led the way with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Deva'Nyar Workman added 19 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Kadri-Ann Lass chipped in 10 points, April Robinson dished out nine assists, and Conor Richardson grabbed seven rebounds for the Dukes. Duquesne opened the game on a 12–2 run midway through the first quarter, hitting five of its first seven shots. The Dukes stayed hot, finishing the period 9-of-13 (69.2%) from the field to take a 22-11 lead into the second. Gronas sparked the third quarter with a three-pointer to push the lead back to 11, and although Slippery Rock pulled within seven, a 7–0 Duquesne run made it 51-37. A Lass layup later extended the margin to 20 with 2:22 left in the quarter, and the Dukes closed the frame on an 18–3 surge to take a commanding 64–46 lead.

Scouting The Rock – A member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Slippery Rock is led by third-year head coach Ryenn Micaletti, whose team was selected seventh in the PSAC West preseason poll. After missing the entirety of the 2023-24 season, senior forward Alyssa Gillin and junior guard Sophia Hook returned to make major impacts, helping SRU improve its win total by five. The duo combined for 65 three-pointers, becoming just the second pair of Rock players in the last 11 years to each hit at least 30 in a single season. Hook finished the year as SRU's third-leading scorer, averaging 9.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and nearly one assist and one steal per game across 22 appearances. The Rock also strengthened its roster through the transfer portal, adding Karianna Woods and Laney Bone. Bone, a 5-foot-11 forward, began her collegiate career at Buffalo before transferring to Cleveland State Community College, where she averaged a double-double with 15.1 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, and 1.6 steals per game. Her standout performance earned her NJCAA All-America honors and recognition as the 2022-23 Tennessee Community College Athletic Association Player of the Year.

Saint Francis Leftovers - Duquesne carried its trademark defensive intensity from last season right into the new campaign, and Monday's contest was no exception. The Dukes smothered Saint Francis from start to finish, forcing 30 turnovers while tallying 22 steals and converting those miscues into 29 points. Duquesne found its offensive rhythm in the third quarter, shooting a game-best 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from the field while holding the Red Flash to just 33 percent (5-of-15). Freshman Alexis Bordas ignited an 11-2 run to open the half, helping the Dukes build a commanding 58-35 lead midway through the frame. Sophomore Nadia Moore led the charge with four points during the stretch as Duquesne forced five turnovers and grabbed two steals. Later in the quarter, Moore and Zecevic fueled a 6-2 burst that extended the lead to 72-41 before the Dukes entered the final period with a 74-46 advantage. Duquesne's relentless defense continued to shine, forcing 10 Saint Francis turnovers in the third quarter alone and collecting 11 steals in the second half.

A New Chapter – Playing in her first game in more than 586 days, redshirt sophomore Gabby Grantham-Medley made her return a memorable one against Saint Francis on Monday afternoon. She recorded her first career double-double, finishing with 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. In just 19 minutes of action, Grantham-Medley shot 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from the field and added a 1-of-2 performance from the charity stripe. The Maryland native opened the season by scoring Duquesne's first basket and tallied six points and four rebounds, three of them offensive, in the first quarter alone. She closed the first half with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting (57.1 percent) to go along with six rebounds, setting the tone for a strong all-around performance in her long-awaited return.

Prompt Results – After entering the season without a single returning starter from a group that collectively accounted for 190 double-figure scoring games, the Dukes looked to new contributors to step up and that's exactly what they got. Sophomore Nadia Moore and junior Dunja Zecevic each turned in career performances on Monday. Moore posted a career-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting (58.3 percent), adding three rebounds and two steals while recording her fifth career double-digit scoring effort. The sophomore appeared in 31 games last season and ranked fifth on the team with 32 made three-pointers. Zecevic made an immediate impact in her Duquesne debut, scoring 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting (63.6 percent) to go along with five rebounds, one block, and one steal. The UTEP transfer spent two seasons with the Miners, where she reached double figures in scoring six times and once recorded double-digit rebounds.

A Storied Tradition – Duquesne, which notched back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 2015 and 2016, will aim to record three consecutive 20-win campaigns for the first time since their streak of seven straight 20-win seasons from 2009 to 2016. The Dukes have amassed 721 victories in program history.
