Pittsburgh, Pa. – Former guard
Tevin Brewer of the Duquesne University men's basketball program has signed a professional contract with Kipinä Äänekoski of the 1st Division A League in Finland.
Brewer is the second member of the Dukes to join the professional ranks overseas in as many weeks, joining former forward
Tre Williams, who signed with
QSTA United out of the BNXT League in the Netherlands.
A transfer from FIU and a native of Fort Smith, Ark., Brewer spent the 2022-23 campaign with the Dukes as a graduate student. He appeared in 29 games, including 26 starts, and produced averages of 7.5 points, 1.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists per contest. A deft shooter, Brewer converted 40.7 percent (81-for-199) of his attempts from the field in his lone season at Duquesne, including 44 percent (44-for-100) from beyond the arc.
Brewer helped the Dukes to their top turnaround in program history in his lone season on the Bluff. A year before his arrival, Duquesne finished with an overall record of 6-24 (.200) before improving 12.5 games as the Dukes finished 20-13 (.606) overall and earned a spot in the 2023 College Basketball Invitational (CBI).
Among Atlantic 10 leaders during the 2022-23 campaign, Brewer paced the conference in both assist-to-turnover ratio (2.82) as well as three-point field goal percentage. Among NCAA Division I leaders, Brewer ranked 16th in assist-to-turnover ratio.
Brewer scored in double figures on 11 occasions in his only season at Duquesne, including a season-high 17 points in a
75-52 victory over George Mason at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse that helped former head coach Keith Dambrot pick up his 500th career victory at the NCAA Division I level. In the win, Brewer shot 7-for-10 from the field, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Brewer also hit a floater from the foul line with just a second left that lifted the Dukes to an
83-82 win over North Florida.
Overall during his NCAA Division I career, which included three years at FIU prior to transferring to Duquesne, Brewer amassed career totals of 977 points and 417 assists in 95 contests while also recording a 2.20 assist-to-turnover ratio. Brewer is the 14th student-athlete for the Dukes to sign a professional contract who played for Dambrot at Duquesne.
The Dukes are under the guidance of head coach
Dru Joyce III, who enters his first year leading Duquesne in 2024-25. The Dukes return a pair of starters and nine letterwinners from a 2023-24 squad that posted an overall record of 25-12 (.676) and advanced to its first NCAA Championship since 1977.
