PITTSBURGH - The starting backcourt of
Dae Dae Grant and
Tevin Brewer combined for 37 points as Duquesne (16-8, 6-5) held George Mason (13-12, 5-7) to a season low-tying point total in a 75-52 win on Wednesday night at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
The win was the 500th for Duquesne head coach
Keith Dambrot.
Dambrot, who is in is sixth season at DU and 25th season overall, is the 27th active coach to reach the 500-win plateau. He is one of just eight among that group who has never coached at a Power 5 or Big East school.
Grant (20 points) and Brewer (season-high 17 points) led a fluid Dukes' offense that assisted on 21 of 29 field goals.
Grant and
Jimmy Clark III led DU with seven and five assists respectively. Clark III, the Atlantic 10 steals leader, had three of the Dukes' 10 steals.
Austin Rotroff added eight points and five rebounds and had a pair of steals in 12 minutes off the bench.
The Dukes limited the Patriots to 37 percent shooting, including 31 percent in the second half.
Grant (13 points) and Brewer (10 points) combined to match George Mason's point total as the Dukes took a 31-23 lead at the half.
DU's first four field goals of the second half were 3-pointers, from Brewer, Clark III, R.J. Gunn Jr. and
Kareem Rozier.
Rozier's 3-pointer was followed by a flagrant one foul on GMU that allowed DU to take a 47-34 lead on a pair of Gunn Jr. free throws.
DU upped its lead to 17 on a Clark III drive with 11:32 left.
The Dukes took a 20-point lead on a Brewer jumper and a Grant layup forced a Mason timeout with the score 59-37.
George Mason would get no closer the rest of the way.
Duquesne plays the second of three in a row at home when St. Bonaventure visits on Saturday, Feb. 11 for DU's annual Red Out. The Bonnies game, set for 12:30 p.m. will be televised nationally on the USA network. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a special Red Out T-shirt.

- This was the 500th career win for sixth-year Duquesne head coach Keith Dambrot. Dambrot, who is in his 25th season overall, has posted 40 wins at Tiffin, 48 at Ashland, 20 at Central Michigan, 305 at Akron and 87 at Duquesne.
- Dambrot is the 27th active Division I coach to reach the 500-win mark. Of the 27, only eight have never coached at a Power 5/Big East school: Mark Few (Gonzaga), Greg Kampe (Oakland), Lennie Acuff (Bellhaven, Berry, Alabama Huntsville, Lipscomb), Fran Dunphy (Penn, Temple, La Salle), Scott Nagy (South Dakota State, Wright State), Ron Cottrell (Houston Christian) and Randy Bennett (Saint Mary's, Calif.) are the others.
- This was the team-high eighth 20-point game for Dae Dae Grant. Grant's seven assists were one shy of his career high.
- Tevin Brewer went 7-of-10 from the field (3-of-4 from 3-point) in scoring a season-high 17 points.
- Duquesne's largest lead was 29, at 75-46 with 2:02 left ... George Mason's largest lead was at 4-0 ... there were two ties and three lead changes in the game ... Duquesne took the lead for good on a Tevin Brewer 3-pointer that made that made it 19-16 with 9:54 left in the first half ... Mason led for 2:52 ... Duquesne led for 34:59.
